the dress over jeans thing...

Have just overindulged on summer dresses and am trying to persuade myself that it is all ok because i can wear them over jeans when the weather is a bit rubbish.

Am I kidding myself?

I think it can look ok, but never do it myself as I feel it makes me look large.

Marthasmama · 14/04/2009 12:54

As long as they are slim fit jeans then should be ok. I do it all the time. And Gok says it's ok, so it must be

brimfull · 14/04/2009 12:55

I always think it looks good on models ,they never seeem ot get the waistband bulgy thing-how do they do that?

kidcreoleandthecoconuts · 14/04/2009 12:55

I have never worn a dress over jeans but I think it is a good look....providing the jeans are tightish/skinnys otherwise they would look very bulky under a dress wouldn't they?

Vamonos · 14/04/2009 12:55

I always envy people who can pull this off, I always look like I had an accident with a dressing up box.

I think the trick may be to find the right trousers, you don't want anything that creates lumps and bumps around your waist and bum.

muddleduck · 14/04/2009 12:55

thanks!
any rules on what dresses we should do this with. I have a couple of oldies in my wardrobe that I never wear as i feel they are now too short for me - is this the answer?

Dress should be more of the tunic/kaftan type, with a bit of an a-line shape, which means that it'll skim your jeans waistband, and not highlight anything you don't want highlighting IYSWIM

KayHarker · 14/04/2009 13:02

I wouldn't wear floaty dresses any other way, tbh.

southeastastra · 14/04/2009 13:07

oooh i've never even though of doing this but will now

ladylush · 14/04/2009 13:09

Or you could try leggings.

Clure · 14/04/2009 13:11

I agree with vamanos, I think it looks really funky on some people but if I try it looks crap. Also that bulgy waistline thing?!!

Clure · 14/04/2009 13:12

Just thought what about linen trousers under a summer dress? Not too floaty though

Marthasmama · 14/04/2009 13:16

I think too much volume Clure, unless you're pg or very, very skinny.

woodenchair · 14/04/2009 13:17

I dress like this alot

I only wear high waisted (read normal jeans before horrible low rise was invented), makes sure there are less lumps below the dress.

Leggings also look good esp with flip flops, ballet shoes or birkis.

stroppyknickers · 14/04/2009 13:19

Totally ok, provided dress is not too tight. My rule is: if the dress is ok on an eighteen year old, but too short for me, wear jeans. Any dress I could wear with tights/ bare legs is too long for a jeans thing.

Pippinella · 14/04/2009 13:22

It depends on the length of the dress I find..

Too long and it can look really bulky and frumpy.

Also second the slim leg jeans. I am hoping to try some of those denim leggings to see how they look under dresses.

ladylush · 14/04/2009 16:51

Topshop sell some nice denim leggings.

mollyroger · 14/04/2009 16:55

this is my default style! Bootlegs and flares look ace under skirts and dresses. A-line is best, but I have a couple of smock-top sundresses which also look great.
I am old and my legs are pale and ropy but still have lovely arms and shoulders, so this look is a life-saver.
