Capsule wardrobe - what would you have?

The majority of my clothes are tatty and ill fitting and I want to bin the lot. I can't afford to replace everything at once - so I really need a capsule wardrobe which is suitable for work (casual dress code) and home.

What do you think are the essentials to any wardrobe? I want quality not quantity.

I don't know but also have a wardrobe full of tatty, baggy, poorly co-ordinating clothes so will watch this thread with interest

Maybe we should just swap our clothes for each others, then at least we'd have something "new' to wear!

Wow - a clothes swap on here would be a great idea..

benandalex · 07/04/2009 20:54

sorry didnt realise i had caps on and meant shirt

I like your suggestions but I can't wear heels as they just hurt! (Hence my log in name....)
I am tall but have shortish legs and long body so I do need heels (an inch or so) but can't find comfy shoes.... (I suppose wellies don't count as shoes do they?)

at swapping clothes. The thing I seem to struggle with most is tops.

Ballet pumps.

Comfy, stylish, practical.

The essentials that I couldn't live without would be:
1x blue jeans
1x black jeans
1x smart trousers
1x shorts or cropped trousers for summer
2x smart/casual shirts
4x cami tops
1x smart-ish cardi
3/4x dressy tops
1x heeled boots
1x trainers
1x flipflops/sandals for summer
maybe a dress?
plus any coats/jackets/accesories/scarves etc..

I just had a clear out of my wardrobe (alot of it was really tatty and all the wrong sizes!) so I'm in the process of updating my wardrobe too!

I haven't got a capsule wardrobe as such but am a big fan of decluttering and not buying clothes that I won't really wear (ditto keeping clothes that I won't wear)

Some essentials:

Fantastic bras x 3 (at least) - from Bravissimo for me.

Decent well fitting jeans x2
Work trousers (2 summer, 2 winter)

Lots of white/neutral tshirts and camisoles. I wear these as an extra layer under long sleeved tshirts/jumpers/cardigans etc.

2-3 knee or above knee skirts with boots

About 4 varying long sleeved tops/jumpers

Also if you are having minimal clothes imo you need accessories. I get various necklaces/pendants from various high street shops £5-£10 each approximately.
