What size clothes does your 12 year old dd wear?

Dd1 is a normal sized 12 year old. She is not skinny, but she is certainly not overweight - I would say that she has a "womanly" figure, with hips etc.

She has just ordered some clothes from Next, they are age 15. She recently bought a bikini age 16 from Tammy. She is convinced that all of her friends are still wearing age 12 clothes, and that by the time she is actually 15, she "will be in size 20 womens' clothes".

Can you please help me to reassure her that

a)the number on the clothes is pretty much arbitrary
b) many 12 year olds are wearing clothes that are marked as being for older children.

Thanks

Your DD1 is worried about her weight, if she is forecasting that she is going to be a size 20 by age 15.

What are her height and weight? Is she fully grown?

lumpsdumps · 08/04/2009 08:33

My daughter is in a size 4 in most places but she's tall and very skinny and am finding it very difficult to find her school skirts that have a narrow waist and the length. She's a 5 and 1/2 in shoes.

emsiewill · 08/04/2009 09:24

Dd is 5'1" - I am not going to mention her weight on here, she would kill me, but to my mind it is perfectly average for her height. She wears size 5 shoes, and me & her dad are not very tall, so I don't think she will be growing much more.

The size 20 remark was an exaggeration, I don't think she really believes that. I am more of the opinion that she will be like me - a natural size 12/14 (which I am currently trying to work my way back to), but will obviously need to ensure she works on exercising and eating properly to keep that way, which is the message I want her to remember, and the example I am trying to set her by doing those things myself, rather than faddy diets etc.

Tell her that 'age' clothes are designed for girls who (like me as a teenager) got taller without really growing into a woman shape.

The age at which you have to start wearing grownup clothes doesn't so much depend on your height or how wide you are as how soon you start going in and out rather than straight up and down.

Anyway, congratulations on the womanly shapeliness!

my DD2 age 13 wears age 11 clothing.

my DD3 age 10 also wears age 11 clothing!

as for DD1.......she is 15 and is sometimes in age 13, sometimes (and finally) is sz 8.............at 12 she too was like DD2 and in age 10 or age 11 clothing.

it really is dependant I think on how quickly they develope. clothing companies IME think that girls develop far faster than my older two have.

having said that, DD1's best friend outgrew all teenage clothing sizes at age 12, as she got very curvy very quickly. she is now 15, and in a sz 10.

dd is nearly 11 and wears 13-14 yr old (or size 8) clothes. Has adult size 5 shoes and weighs 6 and a half stone.

She is very slim

MiserableMotherFlunker · 09/04/2009 18:37

DD is 12 and wears a size 8 women's size (5ft 4 and a size 7 shoe). I have completely given up with the children's ranges as even an age 14/15 is too small on her. It seems that children's clothes manufacturers think pre-teens are all stick thick with no curvy bits!! I must say I get a lot of her stuff in Primark (she can pick up more stuff for the money) and was pleasantly surprised that their size 8 fitted her perfectly as their sizing is usually smaller than other shops.

My daughter is 12. She is 5'6 and 112 pounds. She wears a size 2-3 in woman's

dementedpixie · 19/06/2015 19:22

dd is 11 and wears age 13/14 clothes or sometimes a ladies 8/10 depending on the make.

squizita · 19/06/2015 19:44

I wore size 15 clothes from age 13 (I filled out) until my 3rd year of uni (saved money on the VAT). Grin
Likely she has developed early, that's all.
Boobs don't keep growing infinitely unless you're a 30 something breastfeeding lady it seems but that is another tale!

FunkyPeacock · 19/06/2015 19:48

My DD (12) is about 5'7" so I generally just buy her ladies clothes in a UK 8 rather than buying her kids clothes

Her school trousers are a Next age 14 and fit ok but are a bit on the short size TBH

PerspicaciaTick · 19/06/2015 19:52

My DD is 11yo and wears ladies clothes size 8-10 depending on the cut and fabric. She finds some clothes cut a little wide across the shoulders and the lengths of trousers and dresses can be a little long for her taste (because I'm pointing her towards age appropriate necklines, they seem to come with below knee skirts)...so a petite size 10 is the best bet when we can find something in age appropriate styles.
However, DD is almost a foot taller than most of her friends, is as tall as most of her teachers and wears size 7 shoes so I think it makes perfect sense to her that she needs less child-sized clothes.

JillBYeats · 19/06/2015 19:56

My 12 yr old is in size 6 women's but sometimes has to go up to an 8. Depending on brand in children's she might be a 13/14 but more likely 15/16. She is very active and fairly slim but not skinny. I always cut the size label out of my clothes. Because mostly they are saying 14 and up (in my mind I am a 10) I have a deal to myself that I must do the same when it is an american sizing (and therefore smaller seeming). I remember my (teeny size 8) mother telling me it is just a number and I was a fool for taking notice of it - it did sink in OP despite my 'tsk'ing my poor mother at the time.

12 year old dd wears age 14-15 tops and adult size 6-8 bottoms as she is curvy and has a pot belly Grin

happy2bhomely · 19/06/2015 20:09

My dd is nearly 12 and is 4'10" and weighs 5st 2lbs. She is on the 4th percentile for BMI. She wears size 4 shoes. She eats well and has no concerns about her weight or body image from what I can tell. She has no signs of boobs or hips yet at all. She looks like a baby horse! All limbs and legs that go up to her armpits. She is noticeably slimmer than all girls in her class. She wears clothes from Next for age 12. Most things are too big around her waist and too short on the leg.

I've warned her that if she's anything like me her hips will suddenly appear at age 14, she'll grow 6 inches and her boobs will take about another 7 years to catch up!
