HI,
I am supposed to be helping a friend of mine find a dress to wear to her nieces wedding in May. She is about 5 foot 5, small chest, largish shoulders and hips, and a size 12 dress. She is quite conservative really as well. We went shopping yesterday and she looked best in this
and this but they are a bit dear and the first one I didnt really love although it looked nice on her IYKWIM. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

How old is she? no2 looks like its a lot older style than no1 which is gorgeous.

Tigerschick · 28/03/2009 13:24

No 1 is stunning.
No 2 looks more like a day dress, not really 'occasion' enough for wedding, IMHO.

They are similar in that they are predominently white with a black, floral design, is this a coincidence or is it something she's looking for?

Amandoh · 28/03/2009 13:27

This Phase Eight dress is the same shape as the first dress. It was £99.00 but is now £49.50 and size 12 is still in stock.

Looking at the structured style, these are cheaperlaura ashley another although imo the Monsoon are still nicer.

With small top half and larger bottom half, an A-line dress is very flattering. Coast are normally good but I can't find anything in black and white except this

Springflower · 28/03/2009 13:40

Oh, thanks everyone - it really helps to get other peoples views as you are right - the LK Bennett one was probably a bit plain but just looked really nice on her. She is 40 (but a young 40). The Phase 8 one looks nice and like it is the right style for her (and cheaper) so I will get her to look at that as well. Tigerschick the reason they are probably similar is because she's not really keen on bright colours - there was another one in Monsoon which I thought would suit her (she has dark hair and sallow skin) but she wouldnt try it on!

Wrote this before more were added - the Boden one is nice although the accessories are a bit dear but she could probably find cheaper ones. For some reason A line dresses made her look really hippy - I think she's not classic pear shaped which they maybe suit? Liked the first Laura Ashley one as well. Liked the stripy one as well but I know she wouldnt wear strapless.

Ah, yes that could by why then. I think you've also got to be careful about too much volume around the hips. I'll keep looking, I do love a good internet browse!

Marthasmama · 28/03/2009 13:54

Too pricey?

Springflower · 28/03/2009 14:31

Yes! But nice! Have emailed her some of the others but not had any feed back yet....

Another one here from Monsoon in the same shape at £65.00.

Springflower · 28/03/2009 16:01

Thanks - she tried that one on and the shape was great Amandah but she didnt like the print/colour. I also emailed her a black one from Monsoon in the same shape but we werent sure about black for a wedding - I thought she could brighten it up with coloured shoes etc.

I would try an A-line skirt dress with v neck and thick straps because if you have largish shoulders and hips, then shifts are not the best flattering cut of dress

MIAonline · 28/03/2009 19:05

If she is pretty sure about her sizing, then you can get monsoon dresses, new from ebay. if she liked their dresses but they were too pricey then this could be a good solution.
