Which dress to wear to batmitzvah?

lisalisa · 18/03/2009 19:56

I have a batmitzvah to attend in London . It will be held in a big hotel and be quite a glitzy affair. As we are very close to the couple throwing the party we will be on their table so effectively top table.

I need a dress wtihout breaking the bank so the right side of £100.

I am size 18 with medium norkage, an enormous flabby belly but good legs.

I must have covered arms and also fairly high neckline. Also no higher than knee lenght. If dress is sleeveless will need shrug etc.

I have dark hair and green eyes.

I particularly suit jade green although never usually wear it and found lovely dress in shift dress style in Marks and spencer online ( wish I knew how to do links ) and also have found there a dress by portfolio in black with big circular sequins.

the black dress is easy as it is long sleeved but it is black.

I really really fancy the jade green shift dress but do not for the life of me know what kind of shrug or bolero would go with it. I have a black one already but feel it would pull the jade down to wear witjh blakc and that white would be too casual.

What about silver? Woudl that match and if so where can I get a silver shrug?

help please..........

this one ?

I think silver or gold would work but I don't think black would bring it down tbh

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 18/03/2009 20:32

I would definitely go with gold or bronze accessories with that dress. I have a dress the same colour (different style) and whilst it looks nice with silver, bronze or gold really boosts the impact It's a nice dress too

lisalisa · 18/03/2009 20:35

Tillyscoutsmum - yes , that is it! Thank you so much .

For some reason gold doesn't really suit me - I always think it looks better on blondes or really dark skinned people. Although I have dark hair my skin is quite white and i find it drains me as does bronze.

Any ohter ideas for sleeve cover ups?

chocolate brown

unlikely to be the same shade but might be worth a go

navy ?

lisalisa · 18/03/2009 20:46

tillyscoutsmum- thank you. All are gorgeous.I think the green one would be a different colour. Navy is too daytime though. chocoloate ditto.

Perhpas silver or gold after all? I can always try and add more gold in to balance with accessoires./

Anyone know of any good gold shurgs out there ? Or silver?

www.simplybe.co.uk have big range of dresses, shrugs etc.. size 14 + , reasonable prices and excelletn quality. they have a silver lurex shrug/cardi, sleeves are just past the elbow. it is also in black

lisalisa · 18/03/2009 20:54

Thanks lulumama - unfortunately when I'mtrying to look at the page it just keeps coming up with errors althogh have tried most of day to look at simplybe.

the shrugs are not really long enough sleeved however. Need something elbow length or just above.

I love that dress! Have you ordered it yet? Let us know if it is a flattering cut please?

Lulumama · 18/03/2009 21:02

www.simplybe.co.uk/productcache/DAL/BO8400/QB432JY.html i have this in silver, i wore it for a recent simcha .. it did cover my elbows. but i am short !!

lisalisa · 18/03/2009 21:03

shame its not from boden used2bthin. By the way I used to be thin once too .

Cant order it until i decide what to wear with it - and what shoes too. this is probalby the reason that I don't buy jade green although it really suits me.

is it fruhm? would a sheer cardi be inappropriate?

lisalisa · 18/03/2009 21:04

I am frum lulumama so sheer cardi is a bit hmmmm unless sleeves are fairly long and its not too sheer ifysim

www.simplybe.co.uk/productcache/DAL/BO8435/AG861XA.html

could not find the sheer cardi, but it is in the catalogue, but found the above dress, but it might be too sheer

lisalisa · 18/03/2009 21:31

lulumama - for some reason simplybe just doen'st want to load for me [ sad]. i tried twice to click on the link but although itr brought up the site the page was blank.

lisalisa. Actually there is a purple one in Boden that is a similar shape but way more expensive and no nicer.

I am similar colouring to you (except I've got brown eyes) and wear jade green a lot, it does look great with navy , would a navy pashmina feel a bit smarter or do you need a shrug?

Lulumama · 18/03/2009 21:34

i;ve just clicked on it and it is working, you can call them and get a catalogue delivered. hope you get sorted

boden lovely , sizes quite generous but £££££££££

naomi83 · 19/03/2009 08:44

silver shrug
or this dress so you don't need to worry about a shrug.

lisalisa · 19/03/2009 09:56

Ooh naomi83 - they are gorgeous both of them. Thank you. food for thought now.....

Actually , having wressled with the jade matching issue overnight ( lulumama I do agree jade looks great wiht navy - perhaps the best of all the matching colours - I just think it is a bit daytime ish or just not the shiny evening look I'm after) I am now starting to prefer the dorothy perkins fuschia shift dress ( can't do links) . It has s alovely bow at the front too and is fab. Now looking for shrugs to go wtih that.

Naomi83 - do you think a silver shurg will go with fuschia pink?

OP posts:
naomi83 · 19/03/2009 10:09

this? very pretty, lovely colour and nice with a black shrug, monsoon have them in black too, but probably less tummy flattering than the bravissimo dress

lisalisa · 19/03/2009 11:25

wayhay naomi83 - that's it. I think its better than Jade dress for a big function where we are on top table etc ( therefore really need to be seen to have made an effort etc). I have a black shrug but black shmack shack!!!!

And then its black shoes.......

REally quite fancied silver shrug and silver shoes - would it go with fuschia do you think and if so where to find?

Don't worry about tummy - going to be well under control with help from spandex!!!

OP posts:
WowOoo · 19/03/2009 12:52

Jade dress sounds lovely to me. I always get compliments when I wear mine (rarely).
Fuschia and silver would look great too. Or fuschia and black.

How often will you wear the silver shrug/ shoes again? Get another lovely black one?

You've gotta decide first before shopping/ looking. Have fun!

naomi83 · 19/03/2009 13:17

silver and bright pink might be a bit much? i would go for silver shoes and bag with a green based dress, but black to go with the pink, why not order both and see which fits best, them accessorize around it?

lisalisa · 19/03/2009 13:21

Thanks naomi and wowooo ( love your name!). I'm going to try these combinatinos on tonight i think.
