Want to move from semi to permanent hair colour - need advice!

I started to go grey in my 20s (am in my 40s now) & have used various methods of disguising it. The past few years I've been using semi-permanents but I now think I've got too much grey, especially at the front of my head.

BUT

I'm a bit nervous of using a permanent colour as the last couple of times I did, it went 1) really red & 2) too dark.

With the semis I used a tint lighter than my natural (dark chestnut) colour to avoid the going-too-dark problem.

What brands do any of you recommend & do you have any advice?

TIA

I get good results from Garnier Nutrisse.

Yeah... I was looking at that in Superdrug this morning. Wasn't sure which colour to get though. Do they come up dark?

I use Garnier Belle Colour - one shade lighter than you want works well
