What's your opinion on women 35+ wearing mini skirts.

I tried on a lovely denim mini skirt in new look. I thought it would look great with a thick pair of tights and pair of boots, but i'm put off a little given that i'm 37yrs old.

So I'm asking in all honesty...Am I too old to wear a mini?

And what if you have nice legs but are (gasp) size 16-18?

georgimama · 09/03/2009 20:22

Oh go for it. It's the legs that are important in this - size 16 isn't completely hefferish thank you very much (GM cuts size 16 labels out of clothes). I just don't have the legs either.

I do think if legs are on display arms need to be covered up and vice versa. Having a good figure is not to be confused with actually looking 20. No 35 year old looks 20 (unless any of you are Michelle Pfeiffer, who is 50 but looks 30. Fuck it, she looks better than me any day and I am 30).

KristinaM · 09/03/2009 20:25

how short is teh skirt? do you mean knicker skimming or just above the knee? can we at least advise on the skirt if we can't judge see a photo of you?

KristinaM · 09/03/2009 20:28

is it this pencil skirt? or this rip and repair effect

georgimama · 09/03/2009 20:30

If it's the second one, don't wear it. Nothing to do with how your legs look, but just because it's trashy.

Buy the first one, it's really nice.

lou33 · 09/03/2009 20:34

second one depends how short it is, it doesnt say

i might well be classed as trashy, because my mini skirts are about 3 or 4 inches above my knee, but definitely cover my bot

DrTrillianAstra · 09/03/2009 20:35

Haven't read thread - giving my initial opinion first:

Above-knee skirt with tights is fine. (Bare legs only okay if you are somewhere hot)

If it's the sort of 'mini' they sell in Topshop (barely covering bum) then no.

If it's closer to your knees than to your bum, and you have decent legs (v important) then go for it!

hellymelly · 09/03/2009 20:38

If you like it,and you think you look good in it,then you should blooming well wear it!Why on earth would you not?you are in your thirties, you are not an OAP.

sfxmum · 09/03/2009 20:40

this over 35 would not but it is not a rule for all over 35's imo

DivamakesKimchi · 09/03/2009 20:44

op, ssounds ok to me

Lizzylou · 09/03/2009 21:01

oregonian, I am a 14-16.
My legs are my best feature though (used to be my boobs as well, but DC and gravity put paid to that, without a great bra).

My best friend during my teens/early 20's was a size 20-22 but had the nicest legs, they were such a great shape, I know for a fact she still wears short skirts/opaque tights and looks fab.

upagumtree · 09/03/2009 22:57

Thanks everyone for their opinions. I think judging by the concensus I should be ok, however Kristina it is more of an arse skim than an above the knee
It is in fact www.newlook.co.uk/1602467/160246740/productDetails.aspx

But i'm now worrying that it will be as georgiemama says "trashy". However I loved it when i tried it on..although it isn't my usual attire.

Also i'm only a short arse 5ft2" tall and a size 12/14. So i think i'm gonna go for it

lou33 · 09/03/2009 23:02

if it is any consolation, i wanted one of those but they didnt have one that fitted

upagumtree · 09/03/2009 23:07

I tried on the size 12 and it was a bit loose around the waist, but could be pulled down to lengthen it slightly so it wasn't as short IYKWIM. Yeah, I really like it...backed up by the very good vibes from everyone on this thread I will take the plunge

My mate who's 44 wears a v short denim mini with opaque tights and looks great. Glad you are going for it

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 09/03/2009 23:11

your legs are the last thing to 'go' so I think this look is fine on a 50 year old never mind a 35 year old.

I can certainly imagine Lulu wearing a short-ish skirt/tights/boots combo.

georgimama · 10/03/2009 09:14

Oh, you're short. Fair enough - on me that skirt would be a fanny pelmet.

As I said I'm just about all these MNers who are older than me but have great legs, so ignore me.

upagumtree · 10/03/2009 10:04

If I have time after the school run, I may pay a visit to my local New Look to purchase said item

OP posts:
lou33 · 10/03/2009 17:03

did you get it?

upagumtree · 11/03/2009 00:03

Yes, I bought it today!!! Although it is shorter than I remember when I first tried it on...and I haven't shown it too dh yet. Well i showed him the skirt but he hasn't seen me in it yet. He said, "hmm it's quite short" and "aren't you a bit too old"? The Swine!! But seriously dh is so laid back and just lets me get on with my own thing most of the time and if I like it then he normally does too .
I need to lose my muffin top some weight though, but am currently in the process of trying to do just that with diet and exercise. I bought a size 12 and it fits perfectly. So once i'm a litte trimmer i'll look passable gorgeous in it

OP posts:
lou33 · 11/03/2009 09:46

oh well done

KristinaM · 11/03/2009 22:28

great! and wear it now. life is too short to wait to be a little trimmer

and tell your Dh to sod off with his comments. needs to learn that the secret of a happy marriage is those three little words

"very nice dear"
