Leggings - okay so are there any rules?

Bella73 · 07/03/2009 19:52

I used to wear leggings in the 80s. All the time. But that seems like a lifetime ago now so it's hard to know whether I can still wear them now. I thought not but have been looking in the shops and wondering....

a) are there rules about wearing leggings past a certain age? (I'm 35)

b) I am probably a size 12 normally (currently a size 10 as have lost a ton of weight through combo bf'ing and having painful gallstone attacks - not recommended as a method of weight loss!), do you really need to be 16 and a size 6 to wear leggings?

c) these modern newfangled leggings seem to be more sheer and fancy than what I remember, does that show more lumps and bumps and general thighs-splatting-flat-when-I-sit-down?

d) what on earth do you wear on your feet when sporting leggings?

e) is it hugely uncool to wear full-length leggings (for the Lazy Mummy Who Doesn't Shave Regularly) as so many of the shops seem to only have mid-calf length ones?

Any other legging-related info I should be informed of after a 20 year hiatus?

is it me or is Trinny looking more and more Barbie-ish?

AnyFucker · 07/03/2009 20:39

noooooo, awful

MrsMattie · 07/03/2009 20:42

I'm 31, a size 14 and I love leggings

I wear black ones with short dresses/long tops and boots. I have long slim legs, which does help (am almost 6 feet tall) but I do have an arse, so would never wear with a short, bottom-showing top

Ronaldinhio · 07/03/2009 23:24

No one over 18 maybe 21 at a push should wear leggings

CMOTDibbler · 08/03/2009 08:46

I'm 36 and wear leggings - I love them under wrap dresses and very long tunic. Am sz 12 and a 32" leg, and wear them with boots in winter and ballet pumps/converse sneakers in the summer.

I generally don't wear jeans, but am loving the M&S 12 quid ones (as recommended by BoysarelikeDogs on here) as they are soft, stretchy and come up to your waist (or at least over my tummy)

EffiePerine · 08/03/2009 08:55

I think you have to watch the knees. Mine are on the knobbly side and not their best under leggings.

bohemianbint · 08/03/2009 09:01

I always think they're just like tights and would think it a bit shameful if anyone could see my arse in leggings, IYSWIM.

I reckon they're alright under things, but I'm not sure bout Trinny putting them under that frock...

noddyholder · 08/03/2009 09:04

It isn't about age.An 18yr old with a huge arse would look terrible whereas trinny is over 40 and looks good.Definitely figure related and not age.they are so useful

Tidey · 08/03/2009 09:06

I think they're fine under something, but not worn as trousers. I'm not trying to be horrible, but they seem to be worn a lot by very large people who think they hold everything in, but in fact just accentuate any problem areas by clinging to them.

tattycoram · 08/03/2009 09:07

They're just like very thick tights when worn in winter aren't they? Don't see how anyone could object to them being worn under dresses and leggings.

TonyAlmeida · 08/03/2009 19:05

God oyu lot are miserable
LEGGINGS ROCK!
ABetadad always seems to pop up on style threads to tell us all to wear Harris Tweed,

BandMeeting · 08/03/2009 19:08

Seriously, they are saying trinny is 24?!?!?!

Leggings are fine

lljkk · 08/03/2009 19:18

I wear leggings under dresses. Much more comfy, warmer and better looking than tights.

Mind, I am probably "frumpy" for doing so.

mrsmaidamess · 08/03/2009 19:20

Not frumpy at all. The height of chic I'd say.

AnyFucker · 08/03/2009 20:16

@ tony

TonyAlmeida · 08/03/2009 20:18

My wife would say 'on the knee'.

I say its the cut of the hips and the shoulder and bust that matter for a woman in her 30s. "

"C'mon - who do you know who seriously looks good in a denim skirt over the age of 20?"

AnyFucker · 08/03/2009 20:33

lol toy, I have pulled ABetaDad up on his Victorian attitude before

he takes it on the chin

I have warmed to him and his chauvinistic ways

AnyFucker · 08/03/2009 20:34

sorry, tony

Princeonthemove · 08/03/2009 21:57

AIBU to nearly combust with laughter in mass this morning when recalling 'ROFL@loafers'?

Chunky bangles nearly made me pass out in mirth.

pointydog · 08/03/2009 22:11

leggins with something over the top so you can't really see much of the leggings. That's ok. Possibly

MrsMattie · 09/03/2009 10:35

Agree with BetaDad re: denim skirts, though. They just aren't attractive!

princessmel · 09/03/2009 10:47

I wear leggings a lot.

With smock type dresses over the top.

Or with long length knitted tank tops over long sleeved tops. I have this in grey and purple. www.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=19551&s toreId=12556&productId=1007933&langId=-1&categoryId=&parentcategoryrn=

In summer I wear shorter and mid length leggings with pumps and flat sandles. In winter I wear full length leggings with uggs.

princessmel · 09/03/2009 10:48

Oh and I wear denim skirts and denim shorts over leggins too.

mileniwmffalcon · 09/03/2009 15:04

yeah but you could easily pass for a teenager
