When is one too old for the hippy surf chick look ?

I have tried to be a WAG really I have but genuinely cannot be arsed with it all.
I like Fat face and Roxy and O'Neil but my 8 year is starting to get into it all now and I don't want us to look like we match (expect she looks stunning and I look like an old bag).
I'm a size 10/12 shoulder length brown curly hair and have no inclination what so ever to look groomed.
Is there any hope at all ?

I think Fat Face and those sort of shops are fine across all ages actually. I am 25 and wear some of the skirts and cardis to work but could wear it to the park as well iyswim. It's casual without being slobby. White Stuff is nice too, but you have to pick the pieces carefully. I think Fat Face have gone downhill recently though- I have skirts and t shirts that are 5 years old from there and are still beautiful (this is my favourite skirt of all time) but the more recent stuff has been a bit drab. And if you're shopping in white stuff the tops tend to be ever so short.

PersonalClown · 06/03/2009 13:03

Who cares? Wear what you like and feel comfortable in.
I've just hit 30 and still live in Converse, jeans and rock/alternative type tops.
I don't care as I like it and feel comfortable. I can scrub up ok and have influences from other 'styles' so to speak but I will wear what I want.

ForeverOptimistic · 06/03/2009 13:05

I don't know how old you are but I am 36 and I would wear those brands if I could afford them.

It depends on what you wear them with, the 16 year olds will wear their little shorts with bikini tops and flip flops whereas us more mature ladies will probably be wearing kaftans and a smart bag with ours.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 06/03/2009 13:06

Never, were what suits you and what you like.

LadyOfWaffle · 06/03/2009 13:07

Never IMO. I have seen ladies dressed in the 'surfer' way but well groomed with it (what I call well groomed - not OTT) in their 60's and looked wonderful.

brimfull · 06/03/2009 13:07

ime they grow out of ftface/roxy at about 15yrs so fine for mums

Surfermum · 06/03/2009 13:10

I dress in Roxy, O'Neill and Billabong stuff.

In the summer I can be found in board shorts, vest tops and flip flops and in winter I wear jeans, t shirts and fleeces and wear uggs (although this year I have some fab, furry Roxy boots.

I'm 47. Does that make you feel better ?

Sorrento · 06/03/2009 13:15

Surfermum it does indeed, get me to Bryon Bay
Thanks all I do feel better.
I try to keep in shape but bikini tops and short shorts are long gone, it's more the skirts and vest tops I like.
Thanks for that.

I also like it because it's good quality clothing. The fleeces and hoodies are really warm and the t-shirts keep their shape.

dogtanianrocks · 06/03/2009 13:48

Of course there is hope! I so kwym...
I need to be warm and comfortable more than anything, WAGs must have way a lot of time on their hands!

AnyFucker · 06/03/2009 17:19

well, I am in my 40's and in summer I live in faded jeans, Fat Face skirts, flip flops/converse/Birkenstocks and vest/kaftan/boyfriend cardi combo

it is my look and I'm sticking with it

unless I balloon to 30 stone and can't get into faded jeans, I will still be wearing 'em when I'm 70 I'm sure

noddyholder · 06/03/2009 17:20

Depends on your figure really. That look looks great if you do otherwise a bit sadyou are slim which is a head start

SnowlightMcKenzie · 06/03/2009 17:21

Your title should read:

'When is one too cold for the hippy surf chick look?'

And imo, if you're in the uk, then the answer is 'always'.

squeaver · 06/03/2009 17:23

Why is the choice between WAG and hippy surfer?

And Fat Face isn't really hippy/surfy is it?

daftpunk · 06/03/2009 17:23

i don't do well groomed.... always been a bit scruffy (as my profile shows)...wear what you feel comfortable in...

Foreverthehippychick · 14/04/2026 18:55

I have been waiting for two things to happen, lose the weight gain, check, then to wear flares again. I hated straights coming into fashion. I like 70's fashion and its finally back in again. For the 3rd time in my life. Yes, I am 63 and have decided I am keeping my flares on no matter the fashion changes that occur now. I am wearing the flares and hippy style tops and loving it. I do not show my arms I think. So wear what. Makes you feel happy.
