I thought I'd canvas (pun completely intended ) opinion on this bag. What do you think? Nice colour for this SS season?

I've just realised that I didn't do the link right at the OP. Thanks for playing folks .

"they remind me of those old fashioned lamtinate fabric table clothes that people used to have"

yes exactly! I love that kind of stuff.

thedolly · 27/02/2009 12:06

I've got one!!

But why don't you just iron some sticky back plactic over a piece of cheap matrerial off the market and glue it together yourself?

TheThoughtPolice · 27/02/2009 12:10

I have an OK bag. It is from last season and is in gorgeous emerald and cream. The oilcloth fabric is not as shiny in RL as it appears (or as you might imagine it). The linings are lovely too.

TheThoughtPolice · 27/02/2009 12:11

I'm not convinced of the old lady shopper shape of OP bag though. I'd prefer it in the midi sling version.

muffle · 27/02/2009 12:12

erm... Mascara - I have made myself my own PVC bag! It is basically an orla kiely clone and much admired. I made it out of wipe-clean tablecloth material like you can get in john lewis.

thedolly · 27/02/2009 12:12

Is it the giant stem one ?

OP posts:
TheThoughtPolice · 27/02/2009 12:14

Yes, thedolly

thedolly · 27/02/2009 12:14

muffle - how did you do it? Do tell.

OP posts:
MascaraOHara · 27/02/2009 12:14

see muffle that's what I mean.. why buy something hideous (& way overpriced) when you can make one in 15minutes ?!?!?

thedolly · 27/02/2009 12:16

I love the sling bags too but they scruffle up your clothes

OP posts:
muffle · 27/02/2009 12:19

Well, I had a good look at the real thing, and worked out the basic shape and design (which is very simple for the sling bag, it's basically a flat square, with the corners flattened across to make a basic bag shape). I made the lining first (out of cheap ikea canvas) and needed a couple of tries to get the shape right, but that was OK as it was cheap fabric - then when happy I made the pvc outer to the same shape, and fitted together. I added external pockets as well which OK bags don't normally have. I used a long strap from an old worn-out nappy bag.

I am crafty anyway and have a lot of experience with sewing - it was quite hard to do, probably not ideal for a novice. but v. satisfying.

(Nonetheless I still yearn for a real one!)

muffle · 27/02/2009 12:20

Mascara it took ages! Has lining, pockets and everything.

nailpolish · 27/02/2009 12:27

you need to stop thinking you need a practical bag for every day

a lulu guinness bag is fine for everyday

now a clutch bag i wouldnt use every day

Tobermory · 27/02/2009 12:31

Im another one - I dont *get& OK either.

nailpolish, I think you have great taste in bags, much braver than me. I always stay safe and buy black.
So I'm wondering...
What kind of woman owns a handbag like this?

kettlechip · 27/02/2009 12:31

scruffle is a great word! Am going to adopt that one if you don't mind, thedolly!

And I can't quite decide if I like Orla Kiely bags. I like the leaf print but don't want to look like a walking middle class cliche. Think it's a bit like Cath Kidston - some things I love, but the majority of it I loathe.

thedolly · 27/02/2009 12:32

Thank you for that muffle. It's probably beyond my experience. Why don't you save up for one, you know £2 coins in a jar. It'll take you what, a couple of months?

OP posts:
nailpolish · 27/02/2009 12:32

i have no idea! i dont like black bags or shoes

esp leather

i do have one black leather clutch bag but i never use it

they are fine on other people tho

do you like that black patent one?

Tobermory · 27/02/2009 12:38

The KM one? Ish, but thinkiong its a bit boxy.

Much prefer teh shape of this

this is a lovely colour...and its not black!

nailpolish · 27/02/2009 12:41

oh you should buy a non black bag

GO ON!

you will enver go back to black

i have a red one and an ivory one i use all the time and a grey one for with black outfits

muffle · 27/02/2009 12:55

Dolly I will buy one when the time (and bag) is right. My homemade one is serving me well at the mo.

MascaraOHara · 27/02/2009 13:11

I'm with NP I have tonnes of bags and not a black one in sight... don't have an 'everyday bag either' I love them all

higgle · 28/02/2009 11:14

Tobermory - Maybe the Karen Millen bag is a bit OTT but that black shiney safari dress!!
makes my Boden one look very frumpy

Tobermory · 01/03/2009 17:51

Higgle, is it OTT?

I kinda like it
