have just turned 40 and obviously having bit of mlc (mid life crisis!)

am having birthday bash sat night - want to look glamourous and feel my image needs an update...so, I need your advice

will be wearing vintage 50s frock so something suitably glam would be great

currently got mid brown with natural reddish tint (and plenty o grey now) - it's to just below my ears with a thick fringe - have been through recent (18mths or so) period with fairly tight bob and short trendy (ish!) fringe but fancy something else now

am toying with idea of colours - maybe blonde? (was blonde about 7 years ago, looked quite nice tho I got sick of having to have the highlights in) and fancy losing the fringe now for a while - possibly need something less severe as i am getting on so much

have round to oval face, quite thick eyebrows (mid-brown), and wavy coarsish hair which behaves quite well when straightened (or washed in soft water - think I need to move!)

so, any ideas...

will see if can find representative photo to put on profile

You look great!

Your hair is a lovely colour but can understand, having gone lighter recently myself, that sometimes you just want a change.

Are you having a cut? If not then maybe, if your fringe is long enough, you could have it swept to the side. It looks like you have a centre parting in your pics so perhaps you could part it on one side for a change?

jeangenie · 25/02/2009 18:48

thanks amandoh you are very kind!

am having a cut too as is very unruly right now, but planning longer term to grow it again

yes, will prob try to sweep fringe over (the lines on my aged brow!) and hold it with some flower clips or something suitably fifties-ish...it's a teeny bit short for it but I'll give it a shot

i do just feel like a change. I think the winter has made me yearn for a bit of sunlight, in my hair if nowhere else. I think i's a bit drab and severe right now

got to go out now, hoping will come hom eto a million wonderful ideas that will make me look and feel less like an aged jaded mother of two and more like a glamourous party girl. Ahem.

I found this site really useful when I wanted to change my hair www.thehairstyler.com/

A few bits and bobs you can browse for free or if you subscribe you can put your photo on and try it with the styles. I found it useful as I often find styles I like but they are completely out of the question with the type of hair I have - this tells you what length, thickness, texture each style works with. Colours are a bit dodgy though

Furball · 25/02/2009 20:28

Your hair is good, very classic.

But if you fancy something else how about something like

\link{http://www.ukhairdressers.com/style/index2.asp?R1=9880&month1=&pg=1&styl1=Reds Hair & Beauty\this] I say this style because the model has changed the look Here and \link{http://www.ukhairdressers.com/style/index2.asp?R1=9881&month1=&pg=1&styl1=Reds Hair & Beauty\here} all 3 look fab and trendy and would suit you

i also like \link{http://www.ukhairdressers.com/style/index2.asp?R1=10011&month1=&pg=1&styl1=Guy Kremer\this} but you might think it's abit short.

should I go blonde though? don't want full all over platinum but thought some choppy highlights might be nice

anyone? or will I regret it as too high maintenance???

Furball · 26/02/2009 13:16

is that dark in th photo, your natural colour? If so I would say would be better for reds and coppers.

jeangenie · 26/02/2009 14:59

yes, I think it is my natural colour, but it does look quite dark in that one - altho I put a temp colour in about 3 montsh ago and my hair is quite porous so maybe still a smidgeon on there

problem is I have quite a pinkish face I think so reds and coppers don't really do much for me, also I am just a bit sick of having it quite dark

hmmm....it's one of thoese nobody else can make the decision for you tihngs isn't it?

fab quilt genie

back to the matter in hand, i seem to remember you're me only thinner (i used to be puppydavies, we've spent some time on this board before ) (come to think of it i'm me only thinner nowadays too )

in which case you should absolutely have a purdy cut. like this. when i eventually get my long hair cut that's what i'm having. i'm naturally fair but when i had a purdy before it was dark and i don't think it would work anywhere near as well on lighter hair. plus blonde is a pita as it's harder to maintain at home whereas darker is easy to put temp colours etc over.

jeangenie · 26/02/2009 15:20

hello there congrats n weight loss. I am me only fatter this year so maybe I am now you and you are me...

funnily enough that cut was kind of what I had in mind - sort of a nouveau retro bowl cut I call it - you are amazing...

will be perfect actually with the hair growing out issues I have, and will look good with green taffeta 50s frock I plan to wear on sat

however, am still hankering after some choppy blonde bits for some reason...it's a puppy I may just have to chew...
