Is a long dress ok in this situation???

Am going to a "do" soon. Dress code is not black tie because they don't want people to have to go to the expense if they don't have dinner suits etc. However, am told that at previous of these events there has been a full range of dress, some men wear DJs anyway.
I have a simple long black dress, which I absolutely love. Have very little time to go shopping for a shorter dress, nothing else suitable in my wardrobe, and am trying to lose weight so don't really want to invest in something that - hopefully - won't fit in a couple of months. However, all the other women I know are wearing short cocktail jobbies. Will the long dress be OTT??? Should I just wear it with confidence and try not to worry about looking out of place if I'm the only one in long? Or quickly go see if I can find something else cheap enoughto have it altered if I manage to lose weight before I get to wear it again?

If you love it, wear it. You'll enjoy yourself and look good because you'll feel good.

lilolilmanchester · 23/02/2009 11:47

thanks madrush, that's what I am thinking but then couldn't bear to look out of place. Tho I guess after the second glass of wine I won't care anyway! Just wondered whether people thought it was a completely bad idea.

sounds great

I wear long dresses 'cos they suit me

it it is a simple style, it will look fab and you will stand out (in a good way)

madrush · 23/02/2009 11:50

Have a fab time!

lilolilmanchester · 23/02/2009 11:55

thanks both. I'm a bit older - and bigger - than most other people who will be there so maybe that'll help me get away with it!

ITA with the others. As AF says, as long as the style is simple and not frou-frou ballgown then it will be fine. Besides, the fash mags still reckon the maxi dress is in

lilolilmanchester · 23/02/2009 14:20

it's a bit like this. Thanks for the confidence booster ladies!

That's nice!

Because it's a black dress, I don't think you'll feel self-conscious. Would be different if it was brightly coloured iyswim.

I bet you get LOADS of compliments!

LooptheLoop · 23/02/2009 14:45

Think it will be spot on - it's a classic dress.

lilolilmanchester · 23/02/2009 14:47

thanks!

WOW If it is a bit like your link you are going to look fabulous
Have a wonderful time. I have recently ducked out of a similar "do" as I feel too old and fat. Good on you for going and wearing something you love. I wish I had your confidence (and dress )

muffle · 23/02/2009 14:51

Yes, lovely. Wear the thing that makes you feel good, and you will look good. Have you got some sparkly or pretty jewellery to go with it?

lilolilmanchester · 23/02/2009 14:55

My dress is fairly similar to the one in the link, tho not identical. The nice thing is that it hides my stomach and hips! I think it's just that most of the others will be a lot younger and in slim fit cocktail type dresses, which would be no good on me. I have some nice jewellery, quite simple but goes well with the dress. Thanks again everyone, feel better about it now.

fab dress

you will knock 'em dead

stillstanding · 23/02/2009 16:34

I don't have great legs and so am always tempted to wear long dresses and I find it is almost always ok to where one at night. The party sounds like just the kind of occasion where you can where one. And that dress is fabulous - go for it!

cluelessnchaos · 23/02/2009 18:17

I would probably pin it up with a glitzy brooch just on one side, just enough to show a bit of ankle, gorgeous dress.

lilolilmanchester · 23/02/2009 19:27

thanks again for the votes of confidence! Interesting idea about the brooch, the material is a bit flimsy so not sure whether it would work. Will look out for a brooch and try it and see.

nah, I would say a long necklace
