Want help re: nails....

My nails are so rubbish, as soon as they look like they are nearly at a decent length they break. Espically just after I have filed them.

Iknow acrylic nails just ruin your real nails, but is there anything similar that will strenthen my nails and sop them from breaking? My nails look like a little kids...

Gel overlays? My understanding is that these are not extensions or falsies as such, but really just a kind of permament polish which protects your nails and doesn't chip so keeps them looking good.

newlysinglemummy · 10/02/2009 22:43

I think the problem is that my nails are brittle, I have tried a nail hardner before which really didn't help...

mrssean - so they dont ruin your nails then? I will look into those.

I don't think so newlysingle. Don't take my word for it though, as I have never actually had this done, although I am considering it.

newlysinglemummy · 11/02/2009 19:24

ok, i will look into it tho...

Newlysingle, I have exactly the same problem with my nails. I keep them short because they are so weak but I would love longer nails. The gel overlays sound very interesting.

kellym · 11/02/2009 20:55

OK ladies, i had the same problem, then i bough something called MAVA FLEX - it's a serum for the nails by a company caled Mavala and it is brilliant - my nails nno longer snap off all the time - they are strong and long. tapping on the keyboard as i type this!! i got it at a local salon.

Rollmops · 11/02/2009 21:09

The nicest nails are short with clear polish:-)

I've heard that eating lots of linseed helps them...don't know why and haven't tried it myself. I have disgusting nails...bite them

Have an everlasting polish (or 3 week manicure) from nails inc.
Can be pricy BUT I so love it. I have had acrylics for years and last year started having ELP at nails inc. They basically put a gel coating over your own nails, no extensions no glue and they are exactly like having a french polish until they remove it.

Gives them a hard coating but they are kinder to your own nails iykwim.

I paid around £35 every 4 or so weeks (loyalty card) BUT you could go longer if needed...

Shhhh · 11/02/2009 21:56

btw mava iir is now sold also at selfridges (manchester tc one for sure..)

SwissCheese · 11/02/2009 22:13

Excuse the ignorance what does ELP stand for? I have gel overlays at present as my nails are shockingly bad too - but would consider another option.

I bought a nail buffer from debenhams about 16 months ago. I use it once a month and it brings my nails up to a lovely shine without polish, which is very handy as I can't wear nail varnish for the job I do. I've found that since I've been using it my nails are much stronger and don't flake half as much.
It's a foam block with 3 stages and it takes about 5 minutes to do!

everlasting polish. Basically gel over your own nails done as french polish thus never chips or wears. Removed by nail technician. Marvelous idea
