Can I get married in black? Desperately need help!!!!

I am having a mini-crisis and desperately need help!

DP and I are going away in a few weeks and are planning to have a quickie wedding while we're there - just a 2 min walk in walk out job with our kids. It's not a big deal for us, we've been together ages and talked about it a lot over the last few years. I'd like to make a bit of an effort but am clueless as to what I should wear! I am not a very girly girl so nothing flouncy and wouldn't be seen dead in white. Also it's going to be dead cold where we are so I need to be able to wear tights and woolly cardi on top, and put my warm fluffy boots on straight after? Would like to be able to ice skate in it as that's one of our possible post-wedding activities!

I bought this dress a while back and am totally in love with it. I know I'll look like I'm off to a party in it, but could I get away with wearing it? Was thinking of accessorizing with colour, possibly coloured tights (just so I can look back at the photos and say how dated I look!). Is it a stupid idea? Do I need to think again? Help!!!!!

BTW DP has bought himself a nice suit (metal grey). I wish I was a bloke, it's so easy for them!

That dress is lovely. My SIL got married in black and looked gorgeous.

pinkteddy · 07/02/2009 23:25

It is a lovely dress but I'm a bit superstitious so don't think I could get married in black but maybe I'm old fashioned! What about a monsoon dress or something from designers at debenhams? A friend of mine got married in a monsoon red dress - she looked great - I don't think you need to wear white or cream necessarily.

beanieb · 07/02/2009 23:40

Absolutely lovely dress and given the climate and the activities after the wedding, jersey is a really good idea.

Bright tights would be good, and you could jazz it up with jewelry.

sunflower · 08/02/2009 01:48

Thanks so much for the feedback. I do love the dress...
I'll have a look in monsoon next week. Can't do red though, but would consider other colours. Trouble is, all the summer stuff is in the shops and that's no good for me.

If I go for that dress I need to find some shoes. I have been lusting after some black peep hole heels. Would they work? Other suggestions very welcome!

too flowery and shiny?

could look good with bright tights but maybe too restricting for skating?

choosyfloosy · 08/02/2009 07:21

Love the dress. Laura Ingalls Wilder got married in black, though she did discuss it with her mum first... Have a great wedding

RaspberryBlower · 08/02/2009 07:32

Congratulations!

Nice dress. I think you should get married in whatever you want and feel comfortable in. I think black peep hole heels would work , but I'd wear tights the same as the ones you plan to wear when buying them to make sure it looks allright with an open toe.

RinkyDinkyPinky · 08/02/2009 07:35

Sunflower, the dress is beautiful and I'm really glad you're doing your wedding your way. Could you accessorise with a fake fur stole? Wedding shops do these in off-white and they are v glam.
I'm not sure about coloured tights- they might fight with the dress IYSWIM, although they are of the moment.

belgo · 08/02/2009 07:40

Black is fine! It's a lovely dress. Where will you be getting married?

I wore red with a black shawl for my wedding.

saramoon · 08/02/2009 09:21

I wore a black silk dress for my wedding and that dress is gorgeous.

2pt4kids · 08/02/2009 09:25

That dress is beautiful! Go for it.
I think it would look great with coloured tights and peep hole shoes.
Perhaps purple tights?

AliceTheCamelHasGotTheHump · 08/02/2009 09:25

My mum got married in the 70s in a black trouser suit with a heavy pink silk shirt and a single orchid in her buttonhole instead of flowers. (Also, she had bum-length hair which she got cut into a short back and sides the morning of her wedding ).

She and my dad are still happily married nearly 40 years later so don't worry about superstition. The dress is lovely.

sunflower · 08/02/2009 12:04

Oh it's so lovely to have such positive comments. Getting married in New York We're really excited, it feels very liberating to be doing it this way!

I love the sound of a fake fur stole, must investigate.

beanieb, I love that dress but I have issues with red. I just don't feel brave enough!

Tights-wise I was maybe thinking purple, or teal.

I probably shouldn't worry that much about what I look like, because at the moment it looks like the only photos we'll have of the occasion will be taken by our 10 year old! Also, will probably happen first thing in the morning (8.30am!) so as to avoid the queues.

Part of me thinks I should just wait till we get to NY and go shopping there, but I don't want the days before the wedding to be dominated by shopping crises!

Congrats. The dress is lovely. It is your wedding so you can get married in your pjs if you like but I think the dress will look a lot nicer. As long as you and your dh to be are happy thats all that matters. Have a lovely day

suwoo · 08/02/2009 12:28

I think the dress is gorgeous and with patent peep toes like these and coloured tights it would look amazing. I am a big fan of coloured tights and as long as you accept that you might look back in a few decades and cringe then go for it!!!!!!!! You're in NY and its far from a 'conventional' wedding, so wear what you want.

Make sure you post the photos, I'd love to see them. All the best x

MmeLindt · 08/02/2009 12:33

The dress is lovely. I like the idea of the fake fur stole, would look very glam. Don't worry about superstition, wear what you feel fabulous in.

Penthesileia · 08/02/2009 12:36

Looks fab!

I got married (in church, incidentally - so much more 'traditional' format) in a black dress, with purple tights and green shoes. So, no problem, IMVHO!

Congratulations: I hope you have a wonderful day!

NY!

Sputnik · 08/02/2009 15:52

I got married in black, and that dress is gorgeous, go for it!

CatIsSleepy · 08/02/2009 16:03

my wedding dress was black with gold embroidery and i wore it with a gold wrap

your dress looks fab and a fake fur stole sounds good-very glam

GossipMonger · 08/02/2009 16:08

something like this?

and purple tights would look fab!!

JulesJules · 08/02/2009 16:09

Dress looks fab, and I also think it would look just amazing with a fake fur stole and purple tights, and in New York... am so - go for it!

I wore a very dark coloured velvet dress when I got married - this was a church wedding in winter - I think you should wear what you like. Wearing white is a relatively recent thing.

Have a wonderful time!

GossipMonger · 08/02/2009 16:09

too much??

Disenchanted3 · 08/02/2009 16:10

Wear what you want!

I got dragged into the whole big wedding thing, and I can't even look at my wedding photos now.

PuzzleRocks · 08/02/2009 16:12

I got married in black and we are revoltingly happy. Sod superstition.
