Can anyone explain why girlfriend and boyfirend cardigans are so called?

boyfriend cardis and jeans are so-called because they they are styled to look like something you might borrow off your bloke!

I'd never heard of a girlfriend cardi either until I saw this

now that is what I would call a boyfriend cardi, not girlfriend

Boyfriend jeans - because they were supposed to look like you were borrowing your boyfriend's jeans.

Boyfriend/girlfriend cardis - because they saw that we fell for the 'boyfriend jean' ploy and they've decided to see whether we'll think it's still cute the second time around.

Boyfriend jeans are baggyish (like old 501's) and hide fat thighs are comfy.

Boyfriend jeans definitely look better on the skinny-of-leg, IMO.
