What would you wear for a girls' night out (meal and club) if....

.... you can't get trousers to fit, anywhere, and all your trousers are too shabby/jeans/work trousers; you are mid 40s; and trying to lose weight so don't want to invest a huge amount in a new outfit?

I am currently looking at a grey/black skirt and a black velvet sleeveless top (the black in the skirt is velvety) or a plain black skirt with "something on top". Not sure if either will "do". Happy to buy something but don't want to spend a lot as hopefully will lose more weight over the coming months. Either general ideas of specific links would be very welcome! Thanks.

I would think those options are potentially good. Could you zizz it up by buying some new jewellery or accessories/shoes?

Leeza2 · 30/01/2009 15:40

plain black work trousers or skirt might be ok with new dressy top & a pair of heels

does black on top really suit you? it sound a bit boring to me, sorry

new look and top shop do fairly cheap tops for a night out. you dont want to look too middle aged (i am 46 BTW grin])

what your best bit that you like to show off? legs? norks? trim waist?

NilDesperandum · 30/01/2009 15:41

whats wrong with jeans? you oculd buy a cheap nice top and som cheapy accessories too - agree

nailpolish · 30/01/2009 15:45

the black skirt sounds nice

go and buy lots of jewellery to jazz it up and you will think its a whole new outfit

nailpolish · 30/01/2009 15:45

DO NOT wear jeans

NilDesperandum · 30/01/2009 15:47

i like jeans

so can i not wear jeans to go out with dh tomorrow?

nailpolish · 30/01/2009 15:49

why would yo u want to? jeans are for daytime - everyday

if you ae going out surely you want something a bit more specail

NilDesperandum · 30/01/2009 15:50

jeans are comfortable....

fair play to the OP for considering a skirt. i do not consider skirts

i would like to...but i do not Gin

listenglisten · 30/01/2009 15:51

I'm am out at a friend's party tomorrow night and found a lovely top in Debenhams by Red Herring this morning. Not sure what size you are but they go up to 18.

Wasn't too expensive anyway but got a further 20% with a voucher from the Daily Mail (I know, I know, I don't usually buy it!)Cost me £20 and it's the sort of top which will still look OK when I lose weight.

lilolilmanchester · 30/01/2009 21:59

hi all, sorry first opportunity to come back and delighted with all your responses - thank you all. I have a pair of black jeans which are the best fitting pair of trousers I own, I love them and wear them out most of the time BUT some places in town don't allow jeans, so daren't take the risk. I ONLY consider skirts because after years of wearing trousers, I can no longer find any that fit so have resorted to skirts for work. But not really worn them going out (cos usually wear the smart black jeans).
I do have a lot of nice costume jewellery, so that is a given.
If a skirt, I would normally wear knee-length boots, is that a no-no if we are going to a club (it won't be a megga trendy place, we're all 40+)
re question about black on top - I'm dark haired and olive skinned so do wear a lot of black but agree it's boring!
Re size: I'm a 14 bordering on 16 for bottoms and bordering on 12 for tops

any other comments please?

I'd go with jeans or plain trousers/skirt with a lovely silky top in a bright colour and some big jewellry. I think the answer on the boots would depend on what type - with a heel fine, but not flat ones. And don't go all black ie trousers, top, boots ... looks too old/worky.

samsonara · 31/01/2009 19:27

I think wearing a skirt with a black top will be fine. If you are wearing boots wear tights with a bit of colour and also some nice accessories like a a pendant or statement type jewellery and have your hair done and wear a nice coat or jacket. Aim to look great without looking like you've tried too hard. ( I think as long as the boots don't have a flat heel they will be fine for clubbing)

lilolilmanchester · 31/01/2009 22:35

thanks both. My boots do have a heel. Can't do jeans cos of dress code. Will try on planned outfit and check out my bling.

I would wear all black if you want and tie a scarf or put a nice low belt round your hips.

Good advice re hair and make up here.

themoon66 · 01/02/2009 18:51

If you are going for all black, you need to do something to make it look unwork-like... say low cut or floaty perhaps. Chunky bright jewellry, bright scarf ... etc.

lilolilmanchester · 01/02/2009 19:04

thanks...proposed top is low cut and "cut out" down the middle - defo not work-like.... I think the top and skirt I have planned will be ok if mixed with bling, and appropriate makeup and hair. Would long boots be ok for a "40+" club? or do I need to wear shoes/sandals?

OP posts:
MaplePecanPlait · 01/02/2009 19:37

yes to boots if they have a nice stiletto or kitten heel. Cowboy could work too.

Otherwise I would do heels.

Disclaimer - not been to a club for about 20 years!

MaplePecanPlait · 01/02/2009 19:38

I mean shoes/sandals with heels
