Back in the 80s, would we have worn a jacket with rolled up sleeves with a Ra Ra skirt?

..because I need to a)dress 80s for some thing I have to go to, b)somehow retain my dignity (ha!) and c)if I'm going for it, then I need authenticity, and I can't remember, despite having been there, etc.

So a friend has lent me a dress with a very tight top half and then a Ra Ra bottom half, and even with Spanx etc I'm not going to be able to breathe out without all my muffin-top glory showing. So I thought a Miami Vice type jacket thing as well? Or what else?

Also hair - I have just below the shoulders, thick wavy hair. What can I do to make it 80s?

Thank you!

Outfit sounds fine to me - as for the hair, back-comb it to within an inch of its life and tie a big bow in it a la Madonna in Like a Virgin!

cmotdibbler · 28/01/2009 13:39

Yes, sounds right. Crimp your hair for added authenticity, or use thin rollers to get the full perm effect

bigTillyMint · 28/01/2009 13:41

Yes, I have pictures of me and my friends (one of whom looked like Bobo the clown - think BRIGHT eyeshadow, blusher and lippy). Oh, and BIG hair too!

We thought we looked great

cmotdibbler · 28/01/2009 13:42

Oh yes, coloured eyeliner and mascara too.

Iklboo · 28/01/2009 13:44

Yes - and flourescent legwarmers/bangles/earrings/hairband/tights

And a boob tube

traceybath · 28/01/2009 13:44

blue mascara and pearlised pink lipstick!

i loved my white ra ra skirt - denim jacket would be perfect especially if you could find a nice pale one

Hassled · 28/01/2009 14:15

Thank you all - had forgotten all about crimpers. I might do loads of tiny plaits the night before to recreate the look

lace fingerless gloves!!! ewwww

your outfit sounds fab. It would go with either a bleach-washed denim jacket, or a large boxy blazer jacket thing with sleeves rolled up (think Miami Vice).

usedtoreadbooks · 29/01/2009 16:54

this is the sort of thing I mean. will try to find a better picture.

MyEye · 29/01/2009 16:58

re the hair: blowdry it upside down, then Elnett it

For brownie points: neon streaks, v Bananarama. Miners used to do spray-in hair colour I think. Sigh.

What tights/shoes? Stripy b/w tights would be good. And monkey boots (wtf were monkey boots anyway?). Or burgundy Kickers. Or DMs with rainbow laces.

Classic, as we said back then.

outfit is definitely 80s. after blowdrying your hair & putting LOADS of hairspray, maybe tie a ribbon around it, bow/knot bit at the top
