The bare legged look - do you wear tights? and other interesting questions about tight etiquette

This is for work especially. I have a few dresses and want to go bare legged, but my legs don't stand up to close scrutiny and I feel a bit bare wearing nothing.

What do you wear? Are there flesh [cringe] coloured tights that pass muster.

And while i'm on the subject of tights. I have a brown knitted dress. I have brown and black opaque tights and brown and black shoes (and boots!) - what combo is good? It's a sartorial minefield!

hello pollyanna . i am shameless (& have good legs) & just go bare legged. how about some fake tan? am really NOT a big fan of flesh coloured tights. and think how hot you'd be in the summer... with the dress, i'd go for brown boots & some different tights (wooly/opaque). teal perhaps? or deep red. or even purple.

KarlWrenbury · 27/01/2009 14:45

You want "this works" dryleg oil.

janeite · 27/01/2009 14:47

At this time of year? In England? I normally wear black opaques or other coloured opaques. With a brown knitted dress: magenta tights or teal would be lovely.

M&S "Illusion" tights do for me if I want bare legs but they are quite pale. I detest fake tan.

ladycornyofsilke · 27/01/2009 14:47

I have been thinking about this lately. I'm going to ditch the trousers and start wearing nice dresses this summer but my legs look every day of their 42 years.

janeite · 27/01/2009 14:50

In Summer I do wear bare legs for work sometimes but don't need to be ultra-smart. Some companies would not be impressed by it though.

squeaver · 27/01/2009 14:52

Do you live in Australia pollyanna?

Fake tan for bare legs. Otherwise, opaques. Why not?

Only American businesswomen and OAPs wear flesh coloured tights.

Pollyanna · 27/01/2009 14:56

hi HC! i'm in England - and was thinking for winter. I'm not a fan of flesh coloured tights either - too many american tan undertones for my liking , I just always wonder when I see people in boots and bare legged what they are wearing.

I've never mastered the art of fake tan, and am credit crunched out of regular salon trips atm. hmm, but on the other hand tights always seem to be the wrong colour for me.

Nothing wrong with nude tights
Just stay away from the american tan ones

And tights plus open toed shoes is always wrong

janeite · 27/01/2009 14:58

Boots and bare legs - or skin tone tights - are hideous!

Do you not like opaques? You can get some really lovely ones now.

hoxtonchick · 27/01/2009 15:01

oh yes, that leg oil is fab.

Pollyanna · 27/01/2009 21:22

oh I will try the leg oil - where can you get it from?

I do wear opaque tights - all the time! I quite like the bare legged look though.

corned beef anyone?

hoxtonchick · 27/01/2009 22:19

micro nets, very flattering indeed leg oil.

cmotdibbler · 28/01/2009 11:01

There are times when good, fake tan coloured tights are totally necessary. My legs are glo white, covered in spider veins and usually sporting an assortment of bruises. No one needs to see them, and I can't be doing with fake tan.

In the winter, opaques are the only way to go

OrmIrian · 28/01/2009 11:04

It depends. I have quite a few longish shirts and dresses that I wear without tights. But a few shorter ones that require something. I tend to wear opaque tights with those and boots. Otherwise flesh-toned sheeny ones.

I hate tights. I am prone to thrush and tights are the worst for that. I have worn stocking and suspenders but find them uncomfortable after a while. And hold ups don't!

OrmIrian · 28/01/2009 11:05

BTW I exfoliate and shave in the shower every day. Moisturise...erm ..when i remember

PortAndLemon · 28/01/2009 11:05

Thirty-two pounds ?!?

Flibbertyjibbet · 28/01/2009 11:10

Long skirts and boots in winter, shorter skirts (well not THAT short but between ankle and knee usually!) in summer.

In summer I use one of those holiday skin lotions every few days as my legs are so glo white that even that looks like fake tan on me.

Have very pale see through leg hairs though so can get away with not shaving/removing all the time.

I hate tights for the way they feel round my waist, they make me feel sweaty, and if you wear them with a skirt there's all that static to contend with or an extra layer of underskirt etc.

I only posess black opaque tights.

smurfgirl · 28/01/2009 11:40

I wear M&S natural tan coloured see through tights (v.low denier) and they look really good and natural - well as natural as they can!! I have converted quite a few friends to them.

One drunken night we discovered that my DH and his friends cannot for the life of them tell the difference between see through tights and bare legs so if you do chose to wear them then at least 50% of the population won't be able to tell

I would not wear black tights with a brown dress. Teal would be lovely.
