Comma - do you buy your haute from
Squatters of Ebay?

onlywantsone · 23/01/2009 15:00

I have a beautiful vitage prada skirt - that one of my mother's friends gave me as she is no longer a size 8 and didn't want to watch it rot in her wardobe!!!

Shhhh · 23/01/2009 15:43

I think comma maybe had a little sarcasm there .

imo, haute couture is fashion made for someone..usually whats on the catwalk and isn't available mass produced.
Following fashion shows then high end designers make them "off the peg" and then high street stores follow...

I would guess the likes of posh wears ALOT of hc.

My wedding dress was haute couture although not by a designer...
and im dripping with designer labels .

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 23/01/2009 15:58

Fewer than 1000 women in the world regularly buy haute couture. Given that the average price tag is £40 - 50K for an item of haute couture, that isn't surprising. If you buy designer clothes from a store, you are buying "pret a porter" or ready to wear. It's still lovely but not as lovely as having it specifically made for you . I would think that even Posh wears more Pret a Porter than haute couture.

southeastastra · 23/01/2009 16:50

i thought there may be one or two on here

therealmrs..I would disagree with the posh point...Im sure the designers make her "one off's"..?

BonsoirAnna · 23/01/2009 17:09

No. But I do own quite a bit of prêt-à-porter (aka designer clothing)

mrsseanbean · 23/01/2009 17:13

Good grief no - couture costs about £30k for a dress doesn't it? I know it's handmade and beaded by hand by ancient wizened and supremely skilled seamstresses.... but no.

southeastastra · 23/01/2009 17:19

the chanel ones were about £100k

I'm with Ruby

mrsseanbean · 23/01/2009 17:22

Yeah I know SEA, it's a bummer, non? Do you have to wear the same couture to every red carpet occasion?

BonsoirAnna · 23/01/2009 17:25

Honestly, I'd be perfectly contented with a life that didn't require Haute Couture... but I would like one that needed much more prêt-à-porter [wistful emoticon]

Lovely Mulberry handbag and several pairs of designer jeans. Once you own a pair of fabulous jeans and see how well they last it's hard to go back to the high street. (Yes I know I sound like a ponce). I am desperate for a Temperley London dress from Net-a-Porter but it's still nearly £1000 in the sale!

But I don't own any haute couture.

janeite · 23/01/2009 18:12

You are right off course re: what haute couture is. I think we were mentioning our paltry little designer stocks to make ourselves feel a bit better about not having any haute couture!

sagacious · 23/01/2009 18:18

No

I have some designer stuff but not proper Haute, it would be totally wasted on me.

SuzeMcG · 23/01/2009 20:23

Mooseheart - agree completely about the designer jeans!

Meglet · 23/01/2009 20:27

there was a gorgeous couture documentary on BBC4 the other night. Lots of social X-rays with wardrobes worth ££££££. Karl lagerfeld is obviously a bit mad but comes across as quite fun.

southeastastra · 23/01/2009 20:29

that's what inspired this thread meglet, was fascinating wasn't it. karl's loopy

lilacclaire · 23/01/2009 20:31

southeastastra · 23/01/2009 20:35
