Since this is history, after all.

I agree she most likely has a bullet proof jacket or that is is incorporated into dress?

p1umpudding · 20/01/2009 19:44

I thought she looked lovely.

Conservative, simple, but with colour - understated elegance is the phrase I'm looking for. Yes, her outfit was a little bulky, but it's freezing and like others have suggested, she was probably wearing a bullet-proof vest.

Had she worn something more glamourous, she would probably have overshadowed her husband, which would have lead to a thread on 'who does she think she is'.

elsiepiddock · 20/01/2009 19:49

I thought she looked lovely, apart from green gloves which I didn't think went.

She's very striking - tall and elegant. Weren't their daughters gorgeous!

moondog · 20/01/2009 19:52

Wee bit eveningy I thought.
Yes, knee high boots-too jaunty

Dubya's wife looked nice. She always does. She does gracious and dignified very well.

usedtoreadbooks · 20/01/2009 20:40

I didn't think it was too bad - the green gloves didn't really go but otherwise OK. Bullet-proof vest a possibility, the whole thing was quite bulky. Her children looked adorable though. And I loved Mrs Biden's boots!

she could make a bin bag look good IMO

i liked it - she has her own style

RiaParkinson · 20/01/2009 20:42

almost looked like she had one in the oven

JustKeepSwimming · 21/01/2009 08:19

Lots of internet chat about rumours of pregnancy.

But i think it's more likely a combo of bullet-proof dress & the wining & dining + not being able to get to the gym + not choosing when & where & what you eat.

I hope she's not because i think she'll have enough on her plate as it is.

Lizzylou · 21/01/2009 08:22

I think it made her look a little bulky, was a lovely colour on her.
She obv needed the layers, bullet proof vest aside they did a walk about as well, she didn't want to be shivering next to the fox her husband, did she?

MrsMattie · 21/01/2009 08:22

If you're asking, I thought she looked great.

Personally, though, I was offended by the stupid BBC commentator who said 'And now all those millions of women who have been waiting to see what Michelle is wearing will be satisfied'.

Yeah, that was why I tuned in, obviously. I only think about frocks and hairstyles

Lizzylou · 21/01/2009 08:24

Mrs Mattie

Yes, obviously all females are only interested in fashion, not politics or momentous days in history (realises the irony as posting on a style thread).

Wuxiapian · 21/01/2009 12:31

She looked gorgeous, but then she's a very beautiful woman.

AmIOdetteOrOdile · 21/01/2009 12:33

Interestingly, her outfit looked gold-ish on the British news channels, but on the US ones looked green-ish, which explained the green gloves and shoes.

They are one good looking family.

I wouldn't wear the dress but despite the cold and the odd shape the kevlar was giving her, she looked radiant and rather gorgeous.

MmeLindt · 21/01/2009 18:29

I loved the girls' coats, but was not so keen on Michelle's outfit. I did wonder if the colour was different in real life, iyswim. The combination with the green gloves seemed strange with the yellow/lemon but might have looked better with a gold coloured dress.

Mrs Biden's boots combined with the red coat looked tacky. Would have been ok with a black coat, but the red was too much.

LOVED Aretha's hat.

My DD has just seen Mr President on TV and wanted to know why he has a blue tie on today when he was the guy with the red tie yesterday (how my mum described him so they knew which one was the new president)

Mumsnut · 21/01/2009 18:52

Colour was 'lemongrass' apparently - so greenish tinge?

Scorta · 21/01/2009 18:53

does it matter?

LynetteScavo · 22/01/2009 07:37

Gosh yes!

NorkyButNice · 22/01/2009 08:57

Crewcuts by J Crew (who made the girls' coats) make some gorgeous children's clothes - when we lived in the US I spent many a happy hour perusing the rails wishing DS was old enough to wear their outfits.

Not sure if J Crew ship to the UK at the moment though, but the women's clothes are really good quality too.

Bobbiewickham · 22/01/2009 09:52

Her gloves looked like they were made out of Kermit's skin.

Other than that, nice - although, her hair is a bit 'done'. Looks like she could lift it off and put it on the dressing table at night.

Her daughters are gorge.

And I wouldn't kick her husband out of bed for farting Obama looked very handsome and statesmanlike, too.

zazen · 22/01/2009 10:16

I think she looked lovely - it's not supposed to be a fashion runway (but it is, isn't it!)
The material was very intricate and shows that she has an eye for detail and likes intricate, and complicated textures.

Laura bush looked very plain, 2D, old and grey in comparison to her. Like Miss Havishham, coated in spider's webs.

MrsO's gloves were picking up a greenish tinge in the fabric of her coat and dress I thought.
The scarf added a solidity to the colour scheme and emphasised the layering.
The layers took away some of the bulky look from the bulletproof vest and no doubt layers and layers of thermals.

I liked the boots and coat Dr Biden wore - they looked warm and it was a practical solution to having to wear a dress / skirt in sub zero temperatures. Americans wear red a lot more then we do, but I thought it suited her, especially with an older husband - maybe she was trying to be more 'energetic' with red?

I liked the little heels on both women - storm trooper boots would have been OTT!

I also like the fact that mrsO wore a paste vintage pin, not 'real' diamonds.
And that their kids were dressed off-the-shelf in JCrew.

But mostly I liked the fact that the US has a new presidient and has said Bye Bye to the abomination that was Dubya.
