shoe size - does it go back to normal after pregnancy?

I'm in the last few weeks of first pregnancy - and my feet have started to do that swelling up thing the books talk about. My shoes are now feeling tight and uncomfortable.

I'll have to go and get some new ones I think - but can anyone who has been through this tell me - do your feet stay at the new size or do they shrink back to normal afterwards?

Advice appreciated!

Mine increased from a 5 to a 6!

WowOoo · 20/01/2009 11:11

Mine went back to usual size. Don't go mad at the shops just yet!

Wish the rest of me could have shrunk back down to old size...

sharkyandgeorge · 20/01/2009 11:11

My feet swelled up during pregnancy, they did go back down afterwards but they are bigger now than they used to be. I often find shoes a bit tight and tend to buy wider fit ones no if I can.

HensMum · 20/01/2009 11:14

Mine went back, thank God as I am a big, wide size 8 anyway, so I was really worried they'd stay big.

IdrisTheDragon · 20/01/2009 11:15

Mine went from a size 6 to size 7

ramonaquimby · 20/01/2009 11:17

my feet have gone up half a size after 3 kids

SamJohnsMum · 20/01/2009 11:22

Lots of my friends have different experiences of this. I would say that almost certainly your feet will not stay this size - but that doesn't mean they will go back to what they used to be, I'm afraid!!

Although I lost the bloating that came with the final weeks of pregnancy, I think my feet are still at least half a size bigger that they were and shoes that were always on the 'tight' side are now impossible for me to wear but more generous ones are fine.

As always, though, every woman is different - so you never know!

HTH!!

Mine completely back to normal (2 children) - possibly even slightly smaller as I'm bonier all over now. But that may be just a mid-40s thing anyway

fishie · 20/01/2009 11:29

mine didn't go entirely back. nor hands either.

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 20/01/2009 11:30

My feet have gone up half a size since having DCs

mrsseanbean · 20/01/2009 12:03

I think my feet are wider. I think they just got sqashed outwards with all the extra weight (ds was almost 11lb). I haven't quite had to restort to Hush Puppies and the like, but can no longer wear the dainty little pumps I used to like.

mrsseanbean · 20/01/2009 12:03

squashed

MrsTittleMouse · 20/01/2009 12:10

Mine went back - but it took a bit of time. The water retention should correct quickly, but the extra weight coupled with extra-stretchy ligaments takes time in my experience.

Thanks so much everyone. This is very helpful. I think I will heed the advice that suggests 'don't go mad just yet' - so, one new pair of shoes that feels comfortable to wear to work for the last few weeks, and then see what happens!

Much appreciated!

BeauticianNotMagician · 20/01/2009 17:38

I went up to a 6 and now that i have finally lost a lot of my pregnancy weight they have gone back down to a size 5.

AnyFucker · 20/01/2009 17:38

mine are half a size bigger then pre-babies (8 yrs on)

zanz1bar · 20/01/2009 17:52

one size bigger and wider

Oblomov · 20/01/2009 18:08

I went up a half size or so with 1st pregnancy. And the same with 2nd pregnancy.
I am sure that my feet are wider aswell - although this could be physically impossible, because my feet were as wide as they were long, before !!!!

mrsbaldwin · 22/01/2009 12:34

And a shoe size update ...

I went to the shoe shop yesterday and found I seem to have gone up half a size.

So I have bought one new pair of shoes that will do for both work and home, for now.

Thanks again everyone.

Went back to normal, which was a relief as wide 8s to start with. Couldn't even fit Crocs towards the end of pg!

smellyeli · 22/01/2009 13:12

Mine went from a 6 to a 7 in first pregnancy, then stayed at a 7 plus or minus a bit of swelling - I think you're right just to stick to one new pair for now, and then you can go wild after the baby is born!

Deeeja · 22/01/2009 15:41

my feet went up half a size after 4 children, they are a little wider too. Either that or they got fatter along with the rest of me!
