How good are eco shoes?

I usually buy shoes from places like Clarks, Schuh and Dr Marten's. However, I'm thinking of investing in eco-shoes from now on. I'm a fairly large size 8 and if the shoes don't stretch I can't wear them. Anyone know whether eco shoes stretch as much as ordinary leather ones? Also do they take as much wear and tear?

I have only bought a pair of hemp shoes from the natural collection which is okay in sunny weather but will definitely not last in wet conditions being hemp.

I believe that "beyond skin" are supposed to be good but quite pricey. Celebrities such as Natalie Portman wears them.
