daniel field watercolours - any advice re colour to use?

Hi - I'm about to take the plunge into trying to cover the grey at home, and want to try out Daniel Field watercolours. But - they don't publish the colour chart on their website and I also am feeling nervous about going too dark - I'd say my hair is normally sort of a light ash brown/dark blonde, and I'm doing this to cover a bunch of grey streaks but really don't want to go darker overall as I'm afraid I'll look too washed out (too pale skin). Does anyone use this product and have any advice to share? thanks!

I neglected to add an important note.

After getting the shade you desire, future applications must be applied to just the roots as the colour in the length will build up and become darker over time, if continually applied over the entire shaft. Worth remembering, as it doesn't fade like most other boxed colours.

Shalyn888 · 07/06/2015 19:03

NO definitely not.
I just tried it today, completely saturated just the roots and I got absolutely no grey coverage. I'm 33 and don't have many, but enough to want coverage. I could see it wasn't working when applying, like it was just too thin, and I even mixed it more concentrated than directed. Even the parts I completely soaked with layers of color were unaffected.
I bought this to save money and instead just lost time. I suppose it was worth the try, but today I felt compelled to announce that it doesn't work. So back to the salon.
I got the neutral ash for my dark brown. It looks slightly lighter on the roots now, so I think the advice to get a shade lighter was not good for me either.

Shalyn888 · 07/06/2015 19:06

To add, I did wash with clarifying shampoo and no conditioner the day before. I followed every direction, and left it in one hour.

princessgaynor · 08/06/2015 09:14

I have used both products from both manufactures and have found no difference so choose which ever you want. I have very dark brown hair and had quite a lot of grey streaks but have used dark copper blond which now makes me look like I have highlights :). One bit of advice is after the first application only colour your roots and it will not darken you hair too much. Good luck

038THETA · 24/06/2015 16:37

I used a Daniel field colour several years ago I seem to remember that it make my scalp quite itchy, also the texture is very watery and thats going to make it difficult to do just the roots.
Since he expressly recommends only covering the roots after the first application so as to avoid colour build up you'd think that it would be designed in such a way as to facilitate this.

Also why isn't it available from shops and why dont they just calibrate the colour so that it's in line with other hair colours Confused

Hello Daniel Field
Re your 2209 post "Hi, it is Daniel Field himself here. I have read these posts and comment as follows. I lost control over the trade mark registration (UK only) of my name. This was due to my brother, who was my partner at the time sending the wrong paperwork to Jane Redfern, the present owner of KFV Ltd. She was supposed to be taking on a Daniel Field franchise on a license, just to sell my products via Sainsburys and other UK retail outlets only. This clerical error meant that Jane Redfern felt she was now free to trade generally under the Daniel Field name without any recourse to me. The products she sells are not mine and the formulations do not fit into my philosophy. Daniel Field Direct Ltd and www.danielfieldmailorder.co.uk is my only mail order and internet distributor in the UK. It is based in Devon, in a state of the art warehouse. The products available are genuine and include my current ranges and a number of old favourites where there is still massive demand. Postage is minimal and there is a proper pre and post sales service. I receive a very high level of positive feedback from this service whilst sadly I remain distraught with the KFV Ltd situation. I am embarrassed my name is connected with that company. I take no responsibility for the quality or philosophy of the products they sell under my old trademark and their lack of proper customer service causes me embarrassment every single day. I hope one day to get back my name back but in the meanwhile we continue to develop the brand on a global basis."

I have been using natural hair dyes bearing your name for 11 years, from Sainsbury's, KFV and your company.
I recently received an email from Simply Hair that says "Simply Hair is pleased to announce that we are now an approved distributor for Daniel Field Products. All 38 shades of Daniel Field PPD Free Advanced Watercolour are now available and can be purchased from the link below.
Our existing Natural Colours range will stay the same great product at the same great price! They are now branded Simply Hair Natural Colours to avoid any confusion with the new range of Daniel Field Colours."
Is this true? Who are Simply Hair?
I tried to forward the email to your company to ask if it was true, but your co dont even have an email address!!! This incredible lack of professionalism really dosnt help your case in proving who is the real Daniel Field.

Some information from websites mentioned www.danielfieldmailorder.co.uk, Owner-Daniel Field Direct Ltd
danielfield.net, Owner-Daniel Field
www.danielfield.com, Owner-Tim Butler, Admin-Jane Redfern
www.simply-haircare.com, Owner-James Butler
Take what you want from that.
For anyone that wants to fact check the background of not just the websites related to Daniel Field but also any unknown website, especially if you are considering buying from them this website is good. It provides a lot of good information, such as owner and server details. It's helped me a lot over the years i've used it.
www.scamadviser.com

Robsteron · 12/03/2016 02:08

Also quick fact check shows that the KFV COSMETICS LIMITED Director is Jane Redfern and the Secretary is James Butler.

potterpools · 30/06/2017 13:02

I've ordered some Daniel Field watercolour hair dye to colour my roots which are now showing some greys. I've become concerned about the health risks of "conventional" hair dyes, particularly PPDs which are carcinogenic, and don't fancy having that stuff on my scalp any more, particularly as my scalp has started feeling itchy for a few days after I use it. I am a brunette, and like adding caramel highlights. My question is can I use normal highlights over DF watercolour, as I know you can't lighten hair with DF? I'm OK with foils as the dye doesn't come in contact with the scalp.

Parki64 · 22/11/2017 23:41

Absolute rubbish. Don't waste your money. Good job I got another colour on standby.

Hello everyone! (Updated Clarification of Ownership Situation 2020)

We hope everyone is staying well at these extremely confusing and during these difficult times (Covid-19 Crisis).

What an incredible saga plays out in these messages over the years. My name is Zack Field, I am Daniel's son, acting CEO of Daniel Field Products Ltd and any other official affiliated subsidiaries. Happy to prove this if anyone requires. Daniel is upstairs recovering from a fairly serious Covid-19 case and is thankfully doing better. I am the one who has the enviable task of clarifying over two decades of a Netflix series' worth of twisting and turning allegiances and manufacturing partners and dispatches and tigers....no not really tigers.

I will try to explain as simply as possible:

Danielfieldmailorder.co.uk -
is no longer a licensed distributor of Daniel Field products (since June 2019), but continues to sell unlicensed colour and knock off shampoos etc.

Danielfield.com, Danielfield.net, Danielfieldclinic.co.uk danielfieldproducts.com, danielfieldsuite.co.uk.-
.....Are all REAL..... now..... (2020)... after many years of legal action.

Danielfieldmailorder.co.uk-
will likely be back in our possession soon (due to trademark infringement)

So to clarify:

FAKE: danielfieldmailorder.co.uk
(cease & desist 2020)

REAL: DANIELFIELD.COM (New shop)
danielfield.net (salon)
danielfieldclinc.co.uk (specialist cancer care for hair & skin)
..
many more (were slimming down soon we promise)

We're excited to get back in touch with you all for genuine Daniel Field products. We have so many exciting inventions to share with you!

All the best
Zack Field, Daniel Field & Team

ZackField · 07/04/2020 16:50

Hi Everyone,

If you want updated (2020) clarification on anything Daniel Field. Please read my most recent post in this thread. Thank you.

Pample123 · 24/05/2020 10:22

Thank you, Zack, for clearing up the confusion! It does sound like it would make a good Netflix series! I hope your dad has recovered and that you are all well. I am about to order some hair colour from the genuine site: www.danielfield.com/

Has anyone read all this from start to finish? 'Daniel Field1' claimed that:
My genuine site is www.danielfieldmailorder.co.uk ( it’s the green and white website) The company is Daniel Field Direct Ltd, and is based in Devon - we have been operating for over twelve years. This company is owned and operated by me and my business partners. You are always very welcome to call for advice or to order - the telephone number is 01548 830560 and we have a reputation for excellent customer service!
Then further down, no, that's a bogus site, says Zack Field and now its Daniel Field.com. So what do you believe and who do you believe? Are you buying a totally bogus product?
It's just crazy. I don't think that I believe either person. It might only be £10 but I hate being deceived.
I have tried the hair dye recently. Underwhelmed. Left it on for an hour. Zero grey cover.

There are other organic dyes ladies. Anyone tried any other type such as It's Pure Organic hair dyes or Herbatint?

NannyOgg66 · 19/07/2020 11:59

Hi, I used Daniel Field water colour for many years before i was had grey and it was great it did come out very dark though, my hair was in lovely condition and people would ask me when I was out what I used on my hair. However I then changed to Tints of Nature because I wanted to go a shade lighter. This worked for me for the small amount of grey hair that I had but a few years ago now around time of menopause and starting HRT patches it stopped covering the grey. I've got about 10 to 15 percent at most, I used a mid brown and it would colour the grey with a lighter shade then eventually after few shampoos grey would be fully visible. I've tried Naturetint permanent a few years ago and found it quite drying. I think that is a genuine post from Zack Field as I've looked at the website daniledfield.com and they are also selling permanent colour used in their Salons due to covid 19. The post from Daniel himself is from a couple of years back. I tried in last year or so to go back to Daniel Field colours but same thing happened with grey not being covered for long. I do use their shampoo and magic conditioner though but looks like last time I ordered from wrong site!

ambereeree · 19/07/2020 15:04

The link @ZackField is genuine as far as I know. I used to go live near the salon and bought watercolour from there and online. The stuff they send out is in same little packaging and mixing bottle. The salon is fantastic by the way. I also called that number to order a couple of times. Its good dye.

Starsinthesky12 · 23/01/2022 16:34

So does anyone know which is the genuine website? Is it this one. www.danielfieldmailorder.co.uk/natural-hair-colour/index.asp

CrazyBatLady66 · 19/03/2022 10:06

@Starsinthesky12 this is the genuine site www.danielfield.net/
You can book an online consultation with Daniel Field himself via this website

ENoeuf · 19/03/2022 10:23

This thread is fascinating - just waiting for KCV cosmetics to come on and throw some punches! Who is the real DF? Who will win the trademark back? Tune in next week to find out 😂

CrazyBatLady66 · 20/03/2022 14:32

Sorry should have also said this is the link to Daniel Field shop for products etc www.danielfield.com/
And as Zack Field mentioned this one is for the salon.
www.danielfield.net/
My own opinion on the products are that without PPD some people will struggle to get complete grey coverage(I’m one of the despite only being 10% grey and following Daniel’s instructions) for me this coats the grey in a sort of translucent colour wash so it blends a little ,however for many people it works fine so it’s worth a try as it is far less damaging to your hair than normal hair dye or even other “natural “ hair dyes that even if they don’t contain PPD, usually contain peroxide (unless they are literally a true semi permanent and wash out after 8 or so washes.)

bluestar100 · 02/08/2024 23:17

Really confused about the imposter site issue. Some people have put links to both sites on this chat. If the .com is the imposter site, and the mailorder is the legit. Why am I getting the same site if I click on both links?!

NannyOgg66 · 18/08/2024 11:17

@bluestar100 Danielfield.com is the genuine site as via this you can book an Online appointment to speak to either Daniel or one of his team for hair advice. Not sure what has happened with the previous mail order site now it has changed its name I think to something unrelated.

Hi everyone ? Daniel himself here, defending his honour!

I was sorry to read that it is being suggested that I have made exaggerated claims about my Water Colour.

Water Colour was introduced by me over twenty years ago and has been sold in Boots, Superdrug and Sainsburys at various times since. For the past twelve years has been available direct through my own internet site www.danielfieldmailorder.co.uk

I developed Water Colour in conjunction with Jos. Lowenstein in New York with whom I have a very special relationship. Our aim was to provide a hair dye that would not damage the hair. Water Colour is so special because it can activate the oxidising process without lightening the natural hair colour and therefore it cannot damage the hair at all. Damage occurs when peroxide developers are present and this is not the case with my Water Colour.

I accept of course that many people want to use a hair dye that will lighten the hair and there are many products in the mass market that will do this for them but bleaching in this way does damage the hair over time. Our regular customers want to blend in their natural hair pigment with progressively developing grey hair so as to maintain a natural look throughout their lifetime and leave the hair undamaged and feeling great and that is Water Colour is all about.

Daniel

Hi Daniel. Are your water colours safe for PPD allergy sufferers? Thanks for any advice.

KittyKat2024 · 30/08/2024 12:32

Hi all. I have a severe PPD allergy. Does anyone know if Daniel's Water Colour dye is safe to use? Thanks in advance :)

Hi not sure if you have found the info you were looking for by now but Daniel Field Water colours don’t contain PPD but they do contain PTD which is very similar. I found out I’m allergic to both. It’s fairly likely if you already have a PPD allergy that you will react to PTD.
