My daughter has very tangly/knotty hair

We have the tangle teaser which is great.

What products could I use on her to make it easier to brush and style? She is 5.

The hair dresser told me not to have it cut but when she has her hair too long she just looks all hair with her small face. She doesn't like having her hair cut as she was shouted at and this time the hairdresser kept complaining about how thick her hair was and that she moved. Er, she is 5 and you took 50 minutes to cut her hair. She is going to move a bit but she didn't when told she really had to stay still.

Any tips please and also how often should I condition her hair?

Change hairdresser and have it cut!

What an odd hairdresser. Blunt cutting the ends of hair works wonders for tangles. I think you should try a new hairdresser.

I definitely will. It doesn't look too bad atm but ideally we would have someone come to the house.

Some hair seems to be just more prone to tangles. Dd1 is 9 and is tangly every morning, even if conditioned and combed the night before. She refuses point blank to have it cut, so we just have to endure detangling on a daily basis.

Your hairdresser sounds like she doesn't like children, definitely change!

If it's long enough you could keep one length and trim the ends yourself? That style looks great on small girls I think. I had ling hair and used to have to endure painfiul comb detangling. Then conditioner was invented. Lots of conditioner left on about 5 mins should help.

DD (5) has really knotty, tangly hair too. I use (as recommended here) boots own almond an coconut shampoo and the conditioner too. Lots of conditioner on. THen comb (for hours) whilst wet. I find childrens shampoos make it worse and detanger sprays useless.

This might be a bit of a stupid suggestion as your dd is 5 but my dd's hair stopped being so knotty when I switched from baby shampoo to normal shampoo - the hairdresser suggested it and it really worked.

We have a tangle teezer and I don't think it is all that tbh. I still end up doing DD's hair with my brush even if it has been done with the TT first.

I don't really know what else to suggest, except that when we have DD's hair trimmed, it is sooooo much easier to detangle, so I would probably second the advice to find someone else to cut it for you.

my DD has really thick hair and it used to be quite long, I used to use Avons childrens detanging spray, works brilliantly, then she had it all cut off, works even better!

Try a wide tooth comb 'afro comb' (?) first too, it gets the worst of the tangles out relatively easily.

I section her hair when I comb it too. I hold her hair in my hand carefully so her scalp doesnt get the full brunt as I attempt to get knots out.

Purepurple, have tried that Avon stuff and it was great to start with...

I've tried leave in conditioner, normal conditioner, detangling sprays, you name it and nothing seems to work.

my dd is the same..my sil is a hairdresser, and said that the hair ends (half way down her back) are a few years old and are dehydrayted and old, and therefore get knotty... she said that a good cut or at least a trim will help, but most of all chopping the whole lot off should do the trick!

i'm waiting for her to cut it into a really short bob.....eeeek!

in the mean time, i use loads of conditioner and rinse her hair downwards so it is stright iykwim? then i twist it to get the water out and then comb with a wide tooth comb while its wet.....i generally keep it tied back too, in plaits or a bun.

Is her hair curly - my dd is 4 and has beautiful blonde clurly hair and man is it a nightmare - I put some olive oil in it prior to washing and use an afro comb with lots of conditioner in the bath....I have to wash it every 4 days as it becomes matted otherwise - its the type of hair that just goes fizzy if you brush it. Still have not found the best shampoo/conditioner though

Dd's hair is curly.

I know we have Johnson's condition but the shampoo is an easy comb one I think. Can anyone recommend what I could use? She has a small amount of cradle cap too.

We use shampoo, conditioner and Supersoft Detangling Spray on DD with her tangle teaser - it's works a treat.

I use body shop shampoo and conditioner on my 6 year old's tangly hair. Seems to work well enough if I apply enough of it and comb in through when wet prior to rinsing

Simply Blonde detangler/glosser works wonders on my DD's hair. (She isn't blonde, but she does have very knotty hair). I had hers cut into a short bob, and changed hairdressers as our former one shouted at her for touching a brush !

Have washed with easy comb shampoo and Johnsons condition. Brushed with tangle teaser and have plaited. I think I will keep trimming the back myself. the fringe is tricky though.

Try the detaingling spray - it really does work wonders.

I would say have it cut. Tangly hair is really exacerbated by split ends - getting a nice sharp cut makes it much easier to handle. It doesn't have to be short.
