Can a balaclava ever be acceptable?

No matter how warm I wrap up I always have a really cold face and especially my nose, it seems to 'attract' the cold somehow. I walk everywhere and I always end up feeling cold and miserable with a bright red nose even when the rest of me is sweating. I've tried wrapping scarves around my head but they slip down in the wind and you can't constantly adjust them when pushing a pushchair.

Would I look sinister if I tried some kind of hooded poncho or balaclava? And any ideas where to buy such a garment?

www.bankrobbersupplies.com

ninedragons · 30/12/2008 12:15

Actually, what about those neoprene masks that cyclists wear? This sort of thing

I think they're supposed to be for protection against pollution, but surely they must keep your nose warm too.

notwavingjustironing · 30/12/2008 12:16

why not ditch the balaclava idea and just buy a false nose and line it with fur?

(just an idea... )

MrsSeanBean · 30/12/2008 12:18

or one of those false peel off faces which con artists and spies wear. I wonder if they do them in 'Claudia Schiffer'?

Could you clip your scarf to the sides of your hat with those hair clips - I can't remember what they're called but I think Americans call them barrettes?

If you wear a balaclava, your local police force will hate you - they'll get 40 calls about you every time you walk into the bank or the post office.

JackieNo · 30/12/2008 12:21

I think they do look a bit sinister - you might get away with the one on this page called 'DUAL hat balaclava bob' (no idea why it's called Bob, but there you go ). The top ones on that page definitely give me the willies.

JackieNo · 30/12/2008 12:23

Maybe a pink one might be less sinister?

JackieNo · 30/12/2008 12:25

A few more options here. How about the chin cover?

MrsSeanBean · 30/12/2008 12:25

I'm impressed with the dual hat fleece and bob versions Jackieno! I agree the 3 hole version (what an unfortunate name btw!) would be a no-no.

I am going to order one of the 'bobs' - at that price it's got to be worth a pop!

Yay . Look on the other link - I think they're cheaper there.

MrsSeanBean · 30/12/2008 12:27

BTW ninegragons, thanks for the neoprene linkls, LOL at this one though (Hannibal Lecter anyone?)

Cod has only been gone a couple of months and already the Style & Beauty board has degenerated into questions about balaclavas.

She'd shit if she knew.

MrsSeanBean · 30/12/2008 12:28

The pink Manbi's a good-un jackieno!

OP posts:
MrsSeanBean · 30/12/2008 12:32

Why do you think the chin cover model has his eyes blacked out jackieno? Does this imply recommendation by the manufacturer for nefarious purposes?

OP posts:
JackieNo · 30/12/2008 12:37

Not sure, MrsSB - I did check the website - it isn't called mercenaries R us, but it does have army surplus stuff, so maybe it's to appeal to people who want to think they're hard, so to speak .

FairyMum · 30/12/2008 13:29

A Boden-balaclava?

apuppydaviesisforlife · 30/12/2008 13:39

lololol

how about a buff

RumMum · 30/12/2008 13:45

can you not wrap a scarf round your face?
or do you remember these
from the 80's
can only find a dog modeling them though

MrsSeanBean · 30/12/2008 13:46

What is a buff puppy...? Some kind of scarf thingy? The pictures are not very helpful for ingoramuses such as me.

MrsSeanBean · 30/12/2008 13:48

No can do scarves rummum, they fall down. Best suggestion so far is here (like the jaunty peak too).

apuppydaviesisforlife · 30/12/2008 13:49

it's just a loop of fabric - there's a link at the bottom of the page that shows you lots of ways to wear.

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 30/12/2008 13:49

DD1 has a balaclava. But she is 5 so she won't be robbing any banks and people don't see her as threat.

My nan knitted it for her after she complained that her nose kept falling off while she was walking

MrsSeanBean · 30/12/2008 13:50

Aha, thanks puppy. Yes I see now.

SnowOfHands · 30/12/2008 13:52

I was just about to suggest a buff. I have several. Good for wearing under a cycle helmet too.

Great minds...

MrsSeanBean · 30/12/2008 13:52

This really is a pressing need for me as lately I have taken to walking along with one hand over my nose which can get me some strange looks. Plus the outside of my glove is cold.
