Stylish film buffs... please help me dress for a Fellini themed NYE party

The invitation says "Dress: Think Fellini"

Yikes. Well, I think I might have seen La Dolce Vita once, maybe 10 or so years ago, but essentially I am clueless.

I have a black galaxy style dress, a bit like these but obviously not a Mouret, nor do I look like Cameron Diaz sadly (although folk are always very complementary when I wear it). But maybe that's not quite right? I dunno. Also saw a nice 50s-ish style black shirt dress with a full, short skirt earlier in Warehouse (can't find it on their website though). But as I say, I haven't really got much of an idea of what I'm trying to emulate here anyway (cultural wasteland, me)

Can anyone help?

wear the Galaxy ripoff

and heels

set your hair on hot rollers in a 40s/50s Dita von Teese-y manner

shirt dress sounds nice but won't be formal enough IMO, and besides, he was more 60s sack dresses than the full-skirted Dior New Look era

Oh Mrs. B how lovely to see you

Thanks for good advice (as usual). What's the deal with hot rollers though? Are they easy to use? Expensive?

This should surely be under a heading of 'Ponce Alert'?!

Is it a veh veh posh party?

TheMoistSwimOfSeptimusSwan · 29/12/2008 15:54

Oh, I so wish it was as poncetastitc as it sounds, but sadly I think it will just be the usual NYE boozefest

I'm only really going because it's ex-P's brother's party and they have invited me, rather than ex-p. Whih is a very touching display of solidarity and an acknowledgement of his schmucky behaviour towards me. If anything, I've become a bit aggrophobic since being dumped by him, but I think it's time to make the effort and this is a good excuse.

So I really, really want to look as fabulous as possible!

Can anyone help me with these hot rollers? All new to me

i fyou don't have them don't bother buying them, or use big cheapy velcro rollers innstead

but they are good for giving modern layered longish hair a 50s-ish look

easiest is to start with damp hair, squirt sections with styling spray and roll rollers under from the ends so you have a line of rollers round your hairline (rather than all oevr your head), iyswim.
leave till dry (use blowdryer with diffuser if in a rush), dio not brush

or this girl uses a hot tongy thing

You could go all toga and garland Satiricon look. Wrong civilisation, but there's plenty of fabulous greek goddess' dresses around atm. Tho may be a tad chilly.

Penthesileia · 30/12/2008 14:03

How about going as La Gradisca in Amarcord? Figure hugging red coat/dress/beret?

Or Anouk Aimee (Maddelena in LDV)? Lacey figure hugging dress with strong 60s eyes?

Ireallymustgotobednow · 30/12/2008 20:28

That Dita hair tutorial is brilliant, although the poor girlie looks rather anxious about the whole thing.

Thanks so much everyone, really good ideas. I am going with Mrs. B's suggestion 'cause it won't cost me anything (and have spent a small fortune on make up today as I got over excited at the Benefit counter in Boots and the lady was so nice. Oh dear)

Off to experiment with rollers now...

Ireallymustgotobednow · 30/12/2008 20:29

Oh, I'm Septimus BTW, forgot to change my name back. Duh...

Mrs B - wasn't Fellini Mr Dolce Vita bodacious curves in the fountain?

Altho that is the limit of my fellini references, so maybe the sack dresses thing were later
