Are there any nice body sprays/lotions as (cheapish)alternative to perfume?

Prompted by memories of Hint of Musk Impulse body spray (the 'what reminds you of the 80's thread), and a need to save a bit of money I just wondered if there are any body sprays that smell nice, or a body lotion with a scent that lasts on the skin.

BTW, I have to add that although I used to practically bathe in the stuff, I've sort of grown out of Hint of Musk!

I find using body lotion+cheap perfume helps, Next do sets this time of year and their perfume lasts pretty well.

basementbear · 15/12/2008 21:31

Funnily enough, the only time I ever get complimented on my perfume (and I have worn a whole range of expensive ones over the years) is when I wear impulse! (no-one's ever come running up to me with a bunch of flowers though . I like the impulse "cities" range - the New York one is very fresh and appley.

schneebly · 15/12/2008 21:34

some of the tesco finest perfumes are lovely and cost a fiver. I particularly like their Ginger, vanilla and pink pepper. There are lots of matching lotions and potions too.

hazeyjane · 15/12/2008 21:39

I like the sound of the ginger perfume schneebly, I like spicy perfumes.

I'll have a go with the NY Impulse too (I haven't got anything against Impulse per se, but every time I smell Hint of Musk, i am transported back to parties when I was 15 - not pretty!)

I like using baby oil on my skin, but would love to find something with a smell that lasts and doesn't smell of babies.

hazey - I must have missed that thread - can you link to it please? I loved the Impulse that came in a cream and purple-coloured can. Do they still make it do you think?

Moondancer · 15/12/2008 21:44

Oh god- I wish they still sold 'Aqua Manda'. Anyone old enough (besides me) to remember it? It was dirt cheap. loved the smell and the bottle was fab.

pushchair · 15/12/2008 21:55

Did Aqua Manda smell of orange?

Moondancer · 15/12/2008 22:01

Yes. Actually if I smelt it today I probably wouldnt like it any more! But it would certainly bring back memories!

Christmaspresencethread

Moondancer, I just googled aqua manda, because i don't remember it, and there was a discussion about finding something similar, apparantly Amka body dew, by Jo Wood smells just like it.

I remember being given a bottle of Je Reviens when I was 13, I thought I was the most sophisticated person in the world (I still stuck with Hint of Musk though!)

Aqua Manda - oh my goodness, my mum had a bottle of that in the bathroom cabinet for years, I loved the smell of it, orangey musky (or maybe the musky bit was just cos it was in the cabinet for years!) It was in a dark brown bottle and I thought it was terribly posh looking - although Moondancer has now shattered that illusion

Moondancer · 15/12/2008 22:07

Thanks hazey - will check that Jo Wood stuff out.

mamalovesmincepiesANDmojitos · 15/12/2008 22:07

god a friend was wafting about in the most gorgeous scent the other day. i asked her what it was as i want a proper perfume and she said impulse! blast from the past. it was lovely.

pushchair · 15/12/2008 22:07

Have a strange feeling that Amka by Jo Wood will be slightly more expensive.

pushchair · 15/12/2008 22:09

Is Impulse an anti-perspirent[sp]

expatinscotland · 15/12/2008 22:10

mix essential oils with jojoba oil.

culpeper's 'relaxing' blend is gorgeous and about a fiver.

LynetteScavo · 15/12/2008 22:12

Next purfumes actually smell really nice considering thier price.

roundcornvirgin · 15/12/2008 22:14

I liked the light blue impulse - don't know what it was called. Someone offered me a bunch of flowers in the street once many years ago, but he hadn't bought them so he put them back. Nice.

hazeyjane · 15/12/2008 22:14

that sounds good, expat, do you know where I would be able to find jojoba oil?

Yes i've just realised that Jo Wood is that Jo Wood, so would be pretty pricey!

i get stuff here

jojoba is a carrier oil.

this site is excellent and has good quality stuff at good prices.

basementbear · 15/12/2008 22:22

Pushchair - impulse is not an antiperspirant so it doesn't stop you sweating, it just makes you smell nice!

seeker · 15/12/2008 22:25

Body Shop Vanilla is nice. And 4711 is a lovely Eau de Cologne scent. Or go to Spain and buy an ENORMOUS bottle of Agua di Colonia from the local chemist and put it in a spray bottle.

MrsSeanBean · 16/12/2008 09:52

How much impulse do you spray on roundcorn?! Serioulsy though, I had never considered it as a scent alternative. Do you need to spray on loads as it's cheap?

cornsilk · 16/12/2008 16:02

you have to keep topping it up as it fades
