underwired bras - what do they do?

hazeyjane · 13/12/2008 21:01

Am about to buy some new bras (discovered I am wearing completely the wrong size) but having always worn non wired bras, i'm not sure what the reason is for having wired.Do they give more support? A better shape?

Help please.

I couldnt imagine wearing a non-wired bra!

lizandlulu · 16/12/2008 18:13

my best mate used to look at my bra's in disgust (not that i make a habit of showing my bra's off)

she wears pretty coloured ones and that was one of the main reasons of being measured.

well the main reason being that i was grumbling to a assistant in la senza while my mate was looking round, that they dont do my size. she looked me up and down and sadi come back in 5 mins i will measure you and i think you will be veru surprised!

They pull your tits out of your belly button.

'i have a 42b which fits fine when i am ment to be 38dd!'...

the cup sizes are the same size in these two bras.

if you go up in the cup, you come down in the back size.

ie 38dd becomes (if say a 38 was too tight) a 40d which becomes
a 42c, which could be not far off your b cup, becuase of the totaly difference in styles.

lizandlulu · 16/12/2008 18:40

ahh i see, i have never understood that before, thanks

Tips here from Bravissimo on making sure your bra fits properly. Note particularly the bit about the back strap being horizontal (that was a revelation to me! ).

Also - do new bras up on the loosest setting, then as the elastic stretches, you can move to the tighter settings.

LoolaBoys · 17/12/2008 09:47

Totally agree with what Cornflake girl has said about the back strap being uncomfortably tight. I now couldn't wear a looser bra. I'm a size 10 and only a 28 back. My Mum is a size 18/20 and only wears a 32/34 back.

I am still struggling with mincepiratecats post, my brain seems to have sagged into my boobs - hurry up new bra.

hazeyjane - basically, if you increase the back size by one, then decrease the cup size by one to maintain the same fit.

I don't think this is an exact science though - I would imagine it only really works for one size either way. Someone who is a 38dd isn't really going to fit a 42b/c because the back will be too big.

MincePirateCat · 17/12/2008 14:22

yeah, back bit/band too big, so will ride up at the back, but your actually boob will still fit in the cup.

MincePirateCat · 17/12/2008 14:24

it's pretty exact thru say one design of bra, or manufacturer.

when i started work in R&P i was a 36c, but was really a 32dd.

moons ago tho.

cornflakegirl · 17/12/2008 15:22

mpc - surely it can only work so far though? I'm a 36H - I can't imagine that there's any way 54A is going to fit my breasts -even ignoring for the moment the fact that the back will be quite loose

MincePirateCat · 17/12/2008 15:29

well that is a bit extreme, but in theory it should, altho you could poss get another person in there with you!!!!

a 56 a would more likely be a fat bloke tho.

OrmIrian · 17/12/2008 15:31

Sod underwires. I need RSJs to make mine look like anything these days. The titty-fairy took them away after 8.5 yrs of bfing.

VirginBoffinMum · 17/12/2008 18:56

Underwires are very good for setting off the alarms in airports, so strange women in uniform have to come and frisk you intimately in the nork area whether you like it or not. Usually while your kids are running riot.

You would have thought they could have invented a non-sexist system of surveillance by now that didn't humilate 30% of the population. Or plastic wires.
