Oh god. Jeans. What is a realistic budget for a pair of jeans? And why does shopping for jeans have to be so depressing?

I actually stopped wearing jeans a few years ago because I don't know where to get them and what to buy. I think I really need a pair now.

What's fashionable?
What's flattering?
Where should I buy them?
How much will they cost me?
Why does even the thought of jeans shopping make me want to reach for the gin?

I'm about a size 14 and probably skittle shaped with a dreadful post baby belly.

Help.

I think the bootcut/mummish thing depends on your footwear. Team with a pair of Converse or similar, and you drastically reduce the mumsiness. They must also be long enough in the leg (mine tend to skim the floor - anything shorter makes me look dweeby).

Re: the low-rise arse-flashing, have your tried using a belt? Bit obvious, but it works!

BroccoliSpears · 30/11/2008 20:38

Okay, last question about skinny jeans before I go and do the washing up; my calves are absolutely my WORST bit. No matter how fat or slim I get, my lower legs are consistently shapeless and chunky and urgh and out of proportion with the rest of me. I shouldn't seriously be even thinking about skinny jeans, should I?

BTW, the "skinny flares" from Top Shop were the ones that helped me regain my jean-wearing mojo (after a long post-baby induced hiatus).

BroccoliSpears · 30/11/2008 20:40

Long in the crotch? What?

OP posts:
mrsmaidamess · 30/11/2008 20:40

Yes you should! get some with stretch in, wear them with boots, you will never look back.

MadamAnt · 30/11/2008 20:40

Yes, wear them with boots! I can't bring myself to wear skinnies unless I'm wearing boots.

mrsmaidamess · 30/11/2008 20:41

I mean by long in the crotch, the measurement from the button to the crotch should be longer.i.e, don't be seduced by 'low rise' jeans (lots of top shop ones are).

BroccoliSpears · 30/11/2008 20:42

Footwear. Yes. Oh god I'm so crap, but I really want to get better.

So, if I were to wear a pair or dark skinny jeans and my new dress - what shoes should I wear? (Not boots; moving to hot country).

Oasis do brill jeans if you have big bum and hips (like me)! But I am curvy houseglass ish shape with flatish tum so not sure what tummy sizes are like?

I have the hula jeans as I was wick and tired of having a builders bum, the fit is nice but they do look a bit "cheap" in my opinion. But fine for everyday!

White stuff are also brilliant.

NotanOtter · 30/11/2008 20:42

my calves are big too brocolli - i think a skinny one may well work for you

BroccoliSpears · 30/11/2008 20:45

No low-rise. Gottit.

Topshop skinny flare is nice.

OP posts:
NotanOtter · 30/11/2008 20:48

i have those brocolli

they are lovely but to be honest i save them for best as they are quite flarey aand tight at the top so dressy

BroccoliSpears · 30/11/2008 20:51

I think I like your white stuff ones best. Best to try them on though so won't order online.

OP posts:
NotanOtter · 30/11/2008 20:53

they are definitely the safest choice

dd likes them a lot and she is 14 so sadly i value her style advice!

mrsmaidamess · 30/11/2008 20:53

Woth that nice dress and jeans I would wear coloured flats to match one in the dress...like turquoise Birkenstocks or summit. Whee are you going thats hot?

BroccoliSpears · 30/11/2008 20:57

I do fancy a pair of Birkenstocks. And I can wear skinny jeans with them? Yes.

Dubai. Feelin hot hot hot!

Sort of why I'm worriting about my wardrobe. Have got in to a horrible frumpish rut over the last year and a new start is a good time to start making an effort, but am a bit out at sea with knowing what to wear and what might suit me.

mrsmaidamess · 30/11/2008 20:58

Actually....I reckon skinnies look better with heels. So get thee some coloured wedges. Gawd, its complicated, innit?

BroccoliSpears · 30/11/2008 20:59

I just bought this as well, but am already wondering if that was a mistake. Would that go with jeans? What sort? It's got black trim and I don't really do black.

no help... but..

like you i hate shopping for jeans - find it utterly depressing. discovered last yr that i suit the long and lean ones in gap. have needed new jeans for a while and went to a gap outlet store yesterday clutching a 30% off voucher (courtesy of MN), and came away with 3 pairs for £28. am so excited i can't tell you!

OllieWollieWoo · 30/11/2008 22:15

Only skimmed read posts but I have these and they are great - I am an average size 12. Comfy but flattering.

here

YaddaYaddaYadda · 01/12/2008 21:09

Oasis jeans are fab! Really flattering and not too expensive. If you're going to buy a few pairs then I'd go for dark blue bootcut, comfy boyfriend style and black skinnies - more flattering than blue. Guess black jeans might be a bit hot for Dubai though.

Oh and my SIL swears by Primark skinnes which are only £8 a pair.

BroccoliSpears · 01/12/2008 21:24

Am hoping to go shopping tomorrow morning. Will report back.

Maybe I should just print this thread out and hand it to the assistant?

Boooooooo.
I did not have a successful shop.

I went to Gap and tried on a pair of jeans that seemed okay.
Then I tried on another pair of jeans that seemed okay.
Then I tried on some skinny jeans that seemed okay.

I couldn't decide. I dithered a bit. I decided against and went to the other end of town. The I decided to get them all and went all the way back. Then I changed my mind again. Then I lost the will to live and came home for a cup of tea.
