Little girl's first make up

OK, don't go off the deep end here, I know she is too young, but dd (8) wants some make up for Christmas. I have never worn make up so I know virtually nothing about it. I dislike it on girls too, but dd knows all this and so, in the spirit of keeping the myth of Father Christmas alive, I have decided to get her something of this nature "from him". She will never believe I bought it as she knows how I feel about it.

The thing is, what is the best thing to buy (ie lip gloss, blusher, errrr... what else is there?) and where do I buy it? Will this mean I have to put on a mask, grit my teeth and enter the hell that is Claire's Assessories? Is there anywhere else I can go?

coudl you palm her off with slightly tinted lipgloss and some girly pink products eg shampoo, soap and hair accessories?

Argos have a HSM make up set for £10.00 . Tacky but I got it for my dd .

what about nail varnish on 3/4 yr olds?

My 9 year old still believes in Father Christmas.

i shoudl add that most of my DDs friends are 9 1/2 - 10 and none of them wear make up except to a special occasion, like school disco, where some of them wear lipgloss and a touch of eye make up. or that nasty sparkly stuff

oh yes nail polish with these little sticker things to decorate...that will go down a treat and occupies them for AGES

I had exactly the same situation last year with DD who was the same age. Bought a set in Matalan for about £7 I think with various eyeshadows, lipsticks, lip glosses, blusher, nail varnish etc. The advantage to this turned out to be that it is pretty poor quality and she doesn't get plastered in the stuff when she uses it (novelty wore off very quickly)

She very definitely did believe in Father Christmas last year.

I have been seriously considering getting some kiddy nail varnish and perhaps some lip gloss for my 4yo dd, she keeps colouring herself in with felt tips we have so far had nails and lips decorated in bright pinks and reds. Thank god she has left her eyes alone.

It goes against every fibre of my being, a 4yo in make up, but for dressing up only it can't be so bad, can it? Better than felt tip pen, surely?

DD may not believe in FC anymore (she has 2 older brothers who know the facts) but she also has a younger brother aged 5 who definitely does believe so it is not always easy to find out what dd knows. But she is, I am proud to say, innocent and a little bit away with the fairies, so I wouldnd't be surprised.

The make up would not be worn out btw. She just wants it for dressing up/fun at home.

Thanks for suggestions so far. Apart from Argos, is there anywhere else you would recommend buying it? I would have to make a special trip to get to Argos.

That's what I have done DG, indoors only. I quite like the idea that by the time she is old enough she might know how to apply it properly. And it did help the Father Christmas thing as she was convinced I would never have let her have it and look less like a panda as I did when I first had a go in my teens or whenever it was.

You could order some online from John Lewis if you don't mind it not being a girly set, I think this is really good value for £6.

avon used to do stuff called little blossom, i think, it was fairly shiny with out being too bright and washed off easily.

DD is 4.5 and she's getting some for Christmas . It's all in the name of fun IMO.

Good point chocolate teapot about giving dd a chance to learn early how to apply it properly. I never learnt, and make up is now a closed book to me (not that I want to learn, but I do see it as a sort of disadvantage on rare occasions and I wouldn't like dd to feel disadvantaged).

Thanks for the links/ideas. I don't intend spending too much on it (it is only from FC after all) but I have a better idea of what to go for now.

Is she asking for make up, or are you following the crowd?

Personally, I think 8 is too young - unless she is pining for it in which case I'd go for lip balm and nail stuff.

It's funny how things go full circle- my DD is now 20 and being treated for acne- she says that when it has gone, all she wants to do i to go without make up!

Yes, she has asked for it. She knows I have turned her down flat re buying it, but I like to tease with improbable presents from FC.

I don't own any make up myself and don't wear it. But I know it is what she wants and I am not going to deny her make up as a teen just because I do not wear it. There is no way I am going to let her wear it out, think of it more as face paint for dressing up.
