Higlights for too long - what do I do?

I've finally admitted to myself my hair is now a fetching shade of yellow with dark roots. I have an appointment on Monday but what can I do? I've tried before to go closer to my original shade of mouse but it just makes the roots look worse. Can you dye highlighted hair back to real colour and start again or what...any advice gratefully received

I did and it worked. I was worried that it would go green but it was fine.

Just got back from hairdressers after having darker highlights (lowlights?) added - looks much better, thanks for both replies.
