I want to buy my fiance an engagement ring for xmas, seen a titanium one that i like but what is it? Do you think it looks cheap? Is it a cheap alternative?

I think it's quite expensive in the scale of metals, and its big plus is its so light, so good for those men who don;t really like wearing jewellery (DH has titanium wedding ring for that reason). Don't think its especially cheapo.

nancy75 · 09/11/2008 21:56

isnt it also something that nobody is alergic too and its really strong? could have made up both of those "facts" but it rings a bell

deanychip · 09/11/2008 21:56

Its a very light but strong metal.
DH has one as he is a mechanic and it wont get bent etc like gold or silver will.
His is titanium with white gold through the middle, tis lurvly.

Whizzz · 09/11/2008 21:56

Its a metal - very lightweight used to make alloys

clarebear1 · 09/11/2008 22:06

A very strong and light metal.... fantastic for bikes

shhhh · 09/11/2008 22:09

my sister and her dh's wedding rings are titanium. Think they are becoming quite popular atm.

clarebear1 · 09/11/2008 22:11

Also an alternative for now could be one of them ID bracelets to get engraved but im confused with all the different silvers and golds etc (der) what should i be looking for which looks good and also wont make u green after a couple of wears or go tarnished?

OP posts:
Spidermama · 09/11/2008 22:13

Hardly anyone is allergic so they'll often use it for piercings.

shhhh · 09/11/2008 22:15

Silver can tarnish iir, over time air will affect it BUT you can and must keep it polished etc. You need to care for it.

Gold is good, you can get white gold which is silverish colour ontop and gold underneath. This again can fade but can be re rhodium plated. Usually jewellery places will do the 1st one free withing a year..after that I think its around £30...

Platinum is one of the best as its one metal that few have allergies to,doesn't tarnish or mark and is the strongest metal.
Expensive though. BUT imo worth it.

clarebear1 · 09/11/2008 22:25

ok fanx, whats the difference between like solid silver, and plated stuff etc?

OP posts:
shhhh · 09/11/2008 22:27

solid will be solid yet plated with be a covering of silver afaik..

clarebear1 · 09/11/2008 22:38

Another question sorry!
Do mens engagement rings have to have a diamond in them? do they tend to?

OP posts:
shhhh · 09/11/2008 22:44

mens engagement rings are uncommon BUT I don't think they do have diamonds BUT it depends on your fiance to be........is he the bling type or not..? iykiwm.

How about, you ask him to marry you and buy yourself a ring

clarebear1 · 09/11/2008 22:47

Hes already asked me,we got engaged end of may but he says hes dropped hints that he would like a ring.
U can tell ive never been married b4 lol!
Does it matter whether mens engagement rings are gold, silver or titanium?
Apologies for soooo many questions, wana get this right!

OP posts:
shhhh · 09/11/2008 22:50

I have honestly never heard of the man wanting a ring lol!
Bless him....Does he not mean a ring for the wedding..? some men don't like them some do...

I wouldn't say mens rings need to be any sort, personal choice.
See if he like the colour silver or gold and go from there.

Im not a gold person so my ring was platinum, dh is the same and wanted matching so his wedding band is platinum.

Friends of ours had matching gucci wedding bands..not mega expensive as silver iir...

clarebear1 · 09/11/2008 22:59

i know not very common men have E rings, maybe hes just bein picky coz ive got 1 haha.
Oh i dont know! he wears a gold ring on the other hand but id rather him wear silver so this way i can maybe change him lol!
I was thinking that too about the wedding ring matching, who has a titanium wedding ring????

OP posts:
shhhh · 09/11/2008 23:04

my sis and bil have one!!

Whatever you get him now you will need to get the wedding ring of the same metal. Esp in the sense of gold. One karat will wear the other so they have to be the same.

I guess this is also the case of gold with platinum etc.

why dn't you take him to a jewellers and see what ideas they have..? Take him to a on independant one instead of a highstreet one as you tend to get better dals and more diamond/metal choice than say earnest jones.

I have an engagement.wedding and eternity band all from the same jewellers and dh's wedding band from the same place and they cost a fraction of the price BUT we still have insurance certificates to the full value.

If he wears gold, then he may want to stick to gold...you may get silver and he not wear it iykiwm...

clarebear1 · 09/11/2008 23:22

ok fanx shhh been a help!
Maybe i might leave it for now,did want it to be a suprise present for xmas but wana get it right so maybe ill hava fink x

OP posts:
missmama · 09/11/2008 23:32

DH and I wear matching titanium commitment rings.
He has a yellow gold wedding ring and I have white gold wedding, engagement and eternity rings.
We both wear them on the ring finger of our right hands. We have been together 20years and married for most of that time.

The titanium is in 2 shades, gunmetal and 'silver' and is very hard wearing. His wedding ring has been repaired just because of wear and tear but the commitment ring is about 10 years old and does not have a scratch on it.

clarebear1 · 10/11/2008 16:37

Found 1! 9ct gold and white gold with a litle diamonds, lets hope he likes it!

OP posts:
shhhh · 10/11/2008 19:37

Have a lovely christmas day
