Shiny smooth bob, with lined middle-aged face. Yes or no?

I'm 43, have lost quite a bit of weight over the last few years which has left me with huge rings under my eyes and seems to have accelerate the ageing of my skin. Until recently I had a sort of nape length layered cut which I got so bored of. Last time I went I asked my hairdresser to make it all the same length at the ends but keep some layers for body (I have very fine straight hair). I like it but I remember hearing years ago that it's bad to see a smooth bob from the back only to find a lined older face at the front of it. It sounds daft but I sort of share that feeling.

I am enjoying having my hair more or less the way as it used to be when I was younger but am wondering if I really ought to accept that I'm not 30 anymore. Blue rinse and shampoo and set maybe

Lovely dress you are wearing in that photo by the way!

And hair-wise, my mum is obviously much older than you, and she has a very nice layed bob (like Fern's on This Morning but without so much of the flicky side bits] and it suits her older face really well. It is hard to see from the photo, but maybe add in some choppier layers, and some softness around the face. Personally, I would not worry at all.

There is always the option of adding more colour [like a warm colour] which will brighton your skin tone, and then you perhaps you will feel that your haitcut 'fits' more?

FFS, too old for a bob at 43??? You look great.

BTW you DCs are gorgeous.

OrmIrian · 08/11/2008 17:50

Thanks!

Hair colour might be a good thing to change. I'm much darker than I was. I used to have highlights all the time but too dark now I suspect.

sharp hair is great at any age

your children are truly beautiful

Goober · 08/11/2008 19:54

A bob is a classic style.
Do it.

colie · 08/11/2008 21:49

Your children look like little child models. They are beautiful.

A sleek shiny bob would be fine on you. If your hair is shiny then I would go for it. I am 38 and feel that really long hair is a no no know for my age group but a bob is not.

MaryAnnSingleton · 08/11/2008 21:52

go for the bob - it's timeless and elegant !!

NotanOtterOHappyDay · 08/11/2008 22:24

your children DO look like models!

padboz · 08/11/2008 22:45

I hear what you are saying about the face thing - I have lost 3 stone recently and am bothered by the bags its left under my eyes - I want to put the weight back on to fill them up sometimes On the other hand, people I trust say I look healthier and younger. I have a bob, and having been through what you have suddenly want choppy layers... I'm torn. If you want sleek hair, do it, but I also know what you are worried about.

brimfull · 08/11/2008 23:29

are those photos taken at chepstow?

OrmIrian · 09/11/2008 13:18

Thanks for the replies. I will go with the bob then. I think I am a little over obsessed with ageing - it seems to have suddenly accelerated recently.

And thankyou. for the comments about my DC . I think they are totally beautiful but I don't necessarily expect anyone else to think so.

No not chepstow ggirl. Taunton, Glastonbury and Worthing I think.

Go with the bob. I'm older than you and i've had one done and got nothing but compliments since. They look best if you have it finishing sharply above your jawline slightly. Makes your face look wider and plumper (I have a narrow, thin face).

samsonara · 09/11/2008 14:16

Anna Wintour, has had a trade mark sleek bob and disguised wrinkles for years, here
here

samsonara · 09/11/2008 14:20

She's editor in chief of American Vogue and she's 59.

themoon66 · 09/11/2008 18:43

that second picture of Anna Wintour - her hair is exactly like mine!

Go for it!

OrmIrian · 09/11/2008 19:52

Ok OK she looks great. Not sure I'd ever look quite so sleek and well-groomed though . My hair is similar now - same sort of length and fringe, but still a few layers.
