This has probably been done - can I wear all black to a winter wedding?

I have a lovely black knee length dress, little shrug, black opaque tights, black patent shoes, red patent mock croc clutch and oversized pearls. Is this going to be OK or is everyone going to be whispering about funerals??!

Depends whose wedding, IMO. Friend - fine. Close family - dodge. Son - absolutely not under any circumstances.

I've worn a black dress to a couple of weddings. Accessorized with red (shoes and headband) one time and with champagne pink/gold (sash around dress, jewellery, shoes) another time. Got loads of compliments. Go for it.

I have worn black to two summer weddings, nobody batted an eyelid, they were both friends though.

fleacircus · 07/11/2008 14:37

Are you close in age? Is he handsome schmandsome? My rule of thumb with black would be, is there any possibility of any of the many guests (including those who have no reason not to assume I'm a loon) wondering if I'm secretly devestated at the union. Male cousin, I would say no, too much gossip potential, frissons of speculation will abound.

Blinglovin · 07/11/2008 14:38

No, you can't. Ever. Call me old fashioned but...

extended family member wore black, with a white blouse, to her son's wedding. It was a smidgeon strange.

shootfromthehip · 07/11/2008 14:41

Black dress, yes, black accessories, no- go for some colour.

mrslurkalot · 07/11/2008 14:43

fleacircus - thats v funny! Had not even thought of that but v close family and the thought is more than a little sick making!!! - although he is of course lovely!

O dear, this is not looking good!!! Thought I was sorted, may have to do some panic on line shopping this pm.

I wore a black dress with a black shrug to an october wedding when I was heavily pregnant with DD, it was the only thing that fit! There were no negative comments....in fact there were two other women in black dresses too.

Blinglovin · 07/11/2008 14:56

Mmmm.. .-pregnant people can get away with it.

I find very few people actually comment - it's one of those weird taboos - but people definitely think it. As evidenced by my cousin story above : no one talked about it for months then DSis and I got drunk one night and it all came out!

I agree with other suggestions re colourful accessories/shoes etc.

I did when I was 21 and thought I was edgy and cool. Oh and when I was 22 and STILL thought I was edgy and cool.

In fact at the 2nd wedding I wore black hotpants!
