dd1 (8) has a desigm for a top AND the material for it too

it includes a goth type sleeve and a slice type collar thingy with frilly bits and matching scrunchie

I would just be chuffed if I could make a top of some description that dd1 would want to wear and wasn't completely obviously home made

Oooh, I used to make loads. Those were the days...

IIRC I started by making an apron. ie, cut fabric then hem all the way round. Sew on braid for ties. Easy and good for practising straigth lines on the machine.
