Credit crunch beauty - tell me about shaving my legs

MrsFogi · 13/10/2008 15:42

I've been waxing for as long as I can remember but it costs a fortune and to be honest I'm fed up of being hairy for 2/3 weeks out of every 3/4. So - I'm going to shave my legs. So can anyone tell me which is the best electric razor for those days I'm in a rush (should I get a man's one or a lady's one etc). And what about wet shaves - any tips?

dunnoabout electrci but I quite like the venus wet shaves..they even have sticky attachments for shower - alternatively there is a wilkinson sword type that is very good too

pickie · 13/10/2008 15:45

why not epilate instead?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 13/10/2008 15:52

I use disposable men's razors - forget what they're called but they have two blades, are green and have an aloe vera strip.

(Sorry, I used the last one the other day and have no packaging to consult. )

Wuxiapian · 13/10/2008 15:58

I've tried an electrical razor and didn't find it anywhere near as effective as my Gilette Venus shaver and gel.

MrsFogi · 13/10/2008 16:00

I've tried an epilator - I get a gazillion ingrown hairs before I've even done half a leg!

another vote for venus

Flier · 13/10/2008 16:03

DON'T BUY SHAVING GEL - BUY A HUGE (sorry) tub of the cheapest hair conditioner you can find and use to shave your legs with, I always use conditioner, legs are lovely & soft afterwards

FrayedKnot · 13/10/2008 16:03

I tried a gillette fusion razor (DH got one free with something or other) recently and it was great

harpomarx · 13/10/2008 16:03

I'm in same boat as you MrsFogi - but I just can't shave - stubble and rash in about a day

have you ever tried waxing yourself? it is possible if somewhat time consuming and is a lot cheaper than going to a salon. you can even make the wax yourself using sugar - though I have to admit I have never done very well with this so stick to Veet if I do it myself.

i was in the same boat mrs fogi and used my old epilator and ended up with a zillion ingrowing hairs. I have use electric but god it's slow, IMHO you can't beat a good old twin blade cheapo disposible. nice close shave with one go. Do it when in the shower doesn't take two minutes. only downside is stubble.

get an epilator

MrsFogi · 13/10/2008 16:29

FioFio - I thought it was a good title! The main reason I'm jumping from the waxing ship is that I'm finding two children under 3 and the beauty salon don't seem to make for a relaxing trip to the beautician!
Flier - so I use conditioner instead of shaving gel?

OP posts:
wonderstuff · 13/10/2008 16:32

They are wilkinson sword OldLady, I find them best too. Bloody hate shaving, am saving up for laser hair removal (only another decade and I might be able to afford it) epilators hurt lots
I sometimes use veet hair removal cream, lasts a couple of days and less stubbly regrowth, isnt as cheap as razors though

TheProvincialLady · 13/10/2008 16:37

I'd agree with using conditioner - it is better than shaving gel. I would not use an epilator - they just randomly butcher the hairs on your legs from all directions and cause ingrown hairs in a lot of people (like me).

Trollsworth · 13/10/2008 16:39

I'm with fio (as with most things) I go to Tesco, but tesco value razors, Tesco Value conditioner, and shave my legs

Cappuccino · 13/10/2008 17:01

okay now you lot please provide information on pedicures

not that I have ever paid for one

but my feet are hideous

MrsFogi · 13/10/2008 17:08

Cappuccino - a bit of foot filing every day in the shower does wonders + clean and moisturise your feet before bed.

OP posts:
TheProvincialLady · 13/10/2008 17:18

Yes, daily filing is the way to go (I use a diamond file which sounds v swanky but is a metal file with tiny ground up diamonds on it from Boots abput £8). Also you need orange sticks to do the cuticles (I don't bother with cuticle cream unless I have left it for a while) and foot cream on under socks.

Tinker · 14/10/2008 00:04

Avoid Bic razors. They really do hack at your ankles. Wilkinson Sword or Gilette are teh best.

Purplesplash · 21/10/2008 17:34

Venus very good. Never any cuts because the razor is surrounded by soap. Also Nair works great and doesn't smell as bad as the old days.
