and you are not a professional hairdresser?

just wondering how easy it would be to do,as both the DC are ASD and hate the hairdressers and i have been thinking about doing it myself for a while.

TIA

I do ds's with clippers, just one length all over, it's easy. He's only 4 though, he might complain when he gets older.

ive just done both my ds 4 and 2 hair with cbeebies and treats to keep the 2 year old still think ive done a pretty good job too much hassle taking them both to the barbers especially with a live wire 2yo who wont sit still in new enviroments, go for it!

dilbertina · 13/10/2008 15:13

I get DH to do DD - 4 and DS - 2. He's pretty good at it.

I've done my two since they were little - 10 and 13 now and both have "trendy" haircuts now - so I have managed to progress a bit over the years!! Not difficult at all - I just clippers - smaller at the back - longest on the top and inbetween size on the sides to blend in - and scissors to trim around ears etc (will also use scissors on top) I just watched the hairdresser when I had mine done etc and went from there!! Not had any disasters yet (do DH too!) so give it a go!

Yes sometimes I use proper scissors and a thinning razor (much better for making it look less chunky)

cmotdibbler · 13/10/2008 15:18

I do DS's all the time (clippers with long on top and shorter at back and sides) and DH's sometimes. It looks fine to me, although will be better when DS sits still for longer

I am definitely not a professional hairdresser, but I do DH's all the time. I use the clippers, and scissors to shape around the ears and neck, so it's only good if you want a fairly short hairstyle. Even so, I bet we've saved a lot of money and DH's time. My Dad used to trim my hair too - it's always been long and it's wavy, so any imperfections can be disguised pretty easily. All you need is a steady hand and a bit of practise.

I just did my 2 year old DDs hair into a short graduated bob, longer at sides and shaped into hairline..everyone keeps asking where we got it done and it was actually pretty easy, even though she doesn't sit still!!

Flamesparrow · 13/10/2008 15:44

psycho often does flamechick's for me

buttercreamfrosting · 13/10/2008 15:49

I do DH's, all three ds and my own.
I use clippers for DH and ds1 and scissors for mine and ds2 and ds3.

bonkerz · 13/10/2008 15:51

we gave up going to the hairdressers with DS who is also ASD and now i juust shave number 3 all over. he can cope with the hum of the clippers but cant stand being touched by barber with scissors!

Aefondkiss · 13/10/2008 15:53

Jenk I have been cutting my ds's hair, (4yrs no dx asd traits) since he had a huge tantrum in the barber's shop (I cried).
He was really wriggly to start with, and now he sits pretty well, it takes me about an hour to cut! but that is because I am usually going to the kitchen to fill a bowl up with treats.

He watches a favourite film, hair goes everywhere and he usually looks quite cute afterwards (not perfectly cut hair but it looks quite good).

I use scissors, he would not tolerate the noise of clippers. I use a comb to try and cut straight and also to lift the hair away from his head so if he moves I am able to avoid cutting him... it is hard to describe how I cut it and I have got better with practice.

It is quite addictive once you get the hang of it.... I cut my hair and dd's too, but ours is long and it is only a trim.

shinyshoes · 13/10/2008 15:54

We've done the boys hair ourselves since they were little, they've never been to a barbers shop.

Clippers, one length, all over, done

Wuxiapian · 13/10/2008 15:56

I do my brother's and my son's hair.

Brother has grade 0 all over, my son grade 2 all over.

Quick, easy and cheap.

jenk1 · 13/10/2008 16:14

oh good im glad im not the only one considering it!!!

DS is easy he just has clippers all over.

DH has very curly and thick hair, its got quite long at the back.he wants to keep the length but trim the top and sides.

DD will be the difficult one,she has a bob and ill have to bribe her no doubt, but im going to have a go!!!!!

I do DS1 - easy with clippers HOWEVER - did try a trim of ds2's gorgeous curls (long) BUT hiar got shorter and shorter - and...... next morning ended up looking like Miss Hooley from balamory - our hairdresser was horrified ( did try and pass it off as Tony &Guy!!!! but she saw through me and i had to own up!!!!!!) Never ever again
