Why are most fur/faux fur vintage coats so big?

I've been looking for the perfect animal print, preferably leopard, short swing coat for a couple of years now (I know, its sad... but I collect clothes). Ended up bidding and won one on ebay which the person claimed was a size 10 but too big on me. I'm short and size 10-12. I've even looked in the US but all coats seem so big yet dresses are very small. Anyone knows why? An illusion of luxury maybe?
If anyone has one to sell, get in touch...

because they are vintage, and people wore jumpers back then.
