I did that this year. I bought the foot measure thingy and ordered online and they fitted ds perfectly. I'm aiming for a future where I never have to go into a real shop again, especially accompanied by a small child.

Call me cynical but they are flogging foot measuring guages for £7...

And the instructions for fitting the shoe assume you already have the shoe.

Not to mention that my 3 yo boy won't wear any shoes he doens't like, I have to take him to a shop for him to choose his own, otherwise I'm just wasting my money. So online wouldn't work for us.

Are the gauges only to be used for start rite shoes? Could I use it and then buy any pair from anywhere?

The guages would give you a guide for other shoes but Clarkes for example come up half a size smaller than startrite. For example dd is 2.5 in startrite but a 3 in Clarkes IYSWIM
