Style me for a 1940's evening!

So I need an outfit for a 1940s themed evening with a big band.
Am not sure what angle to go for.
I want to look sexy but am concerned that the reality of the 1940's is lots of homemade clothing and dull fabric.

Will definitely need some of those stockings with the seam up the back.

Then there's hair and make up.

Any vintage fans out there who can help?

I am a size 14, big bottom, medium sized boobs, and shoulder length hair.

TIA

do you lot do vintage clothes regularly then?

I do but, it is not cheap, although if you do it long enough then you find out how to shop wisely, raid rellies wardrobes, how to spot a moth hole at six paces and that the only place for a bargain is usually at car boot sales.

Dragonbutter · 18/07/2008 11:49

right. i've ordered it.
i have some time if it's not right, as the dance isn't until september.

will resurrect this thread sometime, as will also need to style DH. I think he wants to do military. but for now, i better get some stuff done.

Thanks everyone.
You're all fab.

The trouble with buying vintage 40's...

check out the measurements

LisaLessLumpy · 18/07/2008 12:13

You need a nice brooch too

Dragonbutter · 19/07/2008 20:41

do you think shoulder pads would work with thisoli dress?

OP posts:
LisaLessLumpy · 19/07/2008 22:16

It doesn't look like you would need them tbh.

Dragonbutter · 19/07/2008 22:27

are you saying i have big shoulders?

these 'Lana' style are a classic 1940's shoe shape - platform, chunky heel & peep toe. For jewellery, I'd go to Accessorize sale and get a stack of bakelite-stylee plastic bangles in colours that work with the dress. Dress is gorgeous btw .

ranting · 19/07/2008 22:32

I think that dress would fit the bill quite nicely. I have a box full of paste brooches if you want one, (mostly pilfered from our local charity shop for the pricely sum of a quid).

Got to get off here now but if you want one, I'll put some pics on my profile tomorrow for you to have a look at.

LisaLessLumpy · 19/07/2008 22:32

Lol - no I'm not, I mean that the sleeves on the dress look quite puffy already, I don't think you would need to pad them out further

Dragonbutter · 19/07/2008 22:33

those shoes are nice. but i already havethese in black and wondered if they would do?
those lana ones are a bit more special though.

Dragonbutter · 19/07/2008 22:36

ok LLL, feeling a little less worried now.

oh ranting that is very nice of you.
turns out i have plenty time to pilfer the charity shops as the do isn't til october. i'd love to see some pics of what brooches would suit, that would be great. but really there's no need for you to give one up, unless you really don't mind.

I would go with black shoes with the red dress. The Lana shoes are lovely but look totally the wrong colour!

Dragonbutter · 19/07/2008 22:44

yes, the colour would be wrong, but gives me an idea of the style. i'll keep an eye out. i've also been a bit inspired to visit a vintage clothing shop locally that i never usually have a reason to go into.

LisaLessLumpy · 19/07/2008 22:46

If you could get the Lana shoes or similar in black that would be perfect

2loudboys · 19/07/2008 22:51

I agree the Lana shoes are the wrong colour - was just trying to find an example of the 40's shape. Actually, lots of platform wedges around in the 40's so how about these. Good price too!!

Dragonbutter · 19/07/2008 22:57

these are lovely, but i don't really want to spend much. as i've already spent on a dress. will look out in the sales/ebay/charity shops etc

found this on youtube. the andrews sister do hip hop.
warning: open it when the kids aren't around.

in this one skip to about halfway through, one of the andrews sister is wearing a dress very similar in white. it's decorated with some stars. is that something i could do to jazz up the red dress?

OP posts:
toodlepips · 19/07/2008 23:37

this one's a little understated, but i imagine would look great on

toodlepips · 19/07/2008 23:38

ah don't worry... you already have a lovely dress! i see you're on shoes now!

Dragonbutter · 19/07/2008 23:41

oh that one is nice.
i've ordered the oli one and hope it'll be fine.
domesticslattern? what about for you?

2loudboys · 20/07/2008 16:20

look what I found whilst trawling through shoe porn. Very 40's, if they're the right size.

Lola234 · 21/07/2008 12:43

oh bless !

Dragonbutter · 24/07/2008 08:30

Hi all, (if anyone's still interested, i'm going to try not let this drag on til october i promise)
The red dress is great.
I wasn't sure at first as it looked a bit shapeless and 'shirty' but with the right belt it'll look great.
I also treated myself to a trip to a vintage clothing store and had fun trying on there although didn't find anything quite so nice. I discovered that all the stuff i liked was actually 1950s .
I've also bought all the gear to start practising my victory roll hair.

The black belt i have is too wide and doesn't look right. I'm now thinking i need one about 2-3 cm wide. Are there any particular rules about fabrics/materials/buckles etc?

Does anyone think i might get away with accessorising in a cream colour rather than black? Just pondering. Maybe black accessories are a bit sexier.

Ranting? Have you any pictures of brooches yet? How do you wear it?

Thanks to anyone still following this.
