it aint rocket science, but...

don't buy anything UNLESS you know exaclty what you'll wear it with and (crucially) you already have the other items

NQC it all depends on your colouring! One person's bleurgh-making colour (for me: lime green) is another's amazing-making colour (for me: corally red/pink).

If the colour suits you then keep wearing them

Brown top you say.... good, I can do that.

my tip is that there is no such thing as a classic - everything goes in and out of fashion and gets improved upon. so only buy something if you will wear it in the next couple of weeks - no point buying for next winter or whatever as there will be other things that you prefer by then

One of my mates had some good advice from a personal shopper - which I think is a variant on the OP.

Personal shopper said that too many of my mates clothes were "competing" with each other. She was always trying to buy some "drop dead" trousers and top and jumper etc. PS said you need some quiet workhorses that pull everything together.

I think she went for a PS session expecting to buy a squillion "drop dead" outfits and came back with a brown top (I see a theme here!) which just pulled about 6 half worn things she already had into outfits.
