Hair regrowth serums

Looking at Pantene Grow Abundant and Keratase Genesis. The online reviews are wildly conflicting with many reporting great results, but many one star reviews saying that they cause scalp irritation and shedding. I don’t mind trying them and they don’t work, but I don’t want to do damage. Has anyone tried them?
Also on the cusp of starting HRT which might help?

The only thing that has been proven to work is minoxidil.

dontcookwontcook · 30/10/2026 14:55

Regain / minoxidil

60degreecycle · 30/10/2026 14:57

Minoxidil, anything else is snake oil

WhosGotTheKeysToMyBimma · 30/10/2026 14:59

Minoxidil. But it's not a good idea if you have pets.

I use it and it works really well, on both hairline and eyebrows! I'm thinking of getting a dog so will be getting rid of it soon. I'm considering the Champo range of serums.

LeafyGreenSalad · 30/10/2026 15:00

I wanted to stay away from minoxidil as I have a cat and don’t want to take any risks.

Oral minoxidil? You can also get a blood test that checks for the main deficiencies that cause hair loss, ferritin etc, pretty cheaply if you can't get any help from your GP.

I've tried everything, I think my follicles are dead 😥

So, I am on HRT, have tried rosemary oil, which is nice in and of itself, but not sure it did anything, various different kinds of shampoos and conditioners. I also take general vitamins and minerals. Evening Primrose did work for a while, but then my stomach took against it.

I just think I have a genetic disposition to thinning hair, and also I have had a lot of stress recently. I can see all my scalp, and the ugly keratosis patches on my scalp, its awful really. Sigh.

The only thing that makes my hair look good, and the scalp in good condition, is Body Shop Ginger range. It suits my hair and scalp, and the serum seems to bulk up whats left of my hair.

Oh, the really bulky shampoos and conditioners also work, but the hair gets progressively more covered in the yuk, and then after a while just seems sad.

Md hair...its growth serum is a DHT blocker..dht being a major cause of hair thinning and loss. Use that in the morning and 5% minixidol at night

Interesting that HRT hasn’t made a difference. I’m sure stress does play a part.

Edited

I wouldn’t want to take the risk to be honest. Good idea about ferritin testing.

I did a lot of research into this when I lost a lot of hair from various hair dying misadventures. I would do a hair mask twice a week minimum and usually overnight. For the mask I’d mix 3/4s of a carrier oil e.g joboba oil with 1/4 caster oil - it’s the caster oil that supports scalp health/hair growth. I swear by it and still do the mask on an ad hoc basis now.

If you do use this be careful with the castor oil, you only need a small amount (teaspoon)…it’s hard to wash out if you use more

oh that’s interesting, thank you.

I seem to be having a degree of success with Champo serum drops. I have been using it every night just on the area at the top and sides where I've had hairloss, since coming off HRT. I can't see such a wide strip of skin along the parting and have some baby hair along the forehead and sides.

I've been on it for about 8 weeks. It will take a few months to know for sure.

Do report back!

The oral minoxidil will only affect your cat if it can get at it, if you keep it in a place your cat can't access it you'd be fine.

Superdrug do a hair health blood test for about £100 that checks for the main deficiencies, so you could start there, wouldn't harm to find out.

Theresawaytobehonestandkind · 31/10/2026 17:27

I have a dog so can’t use minoxidil after buying two cans of regaine from boots. Sat in a cupboard now never to be used. I use aminexil to stop shedding and use pumpkin seed oil topically and orally and have had good success with it. Studies have shown it gives the same results as minoxidil

Neuronimo · 31/10/2026 18:23

I shall report back in a couple of months. It smells lovely and isn't too greasy, which is a bonus.
