Bias slip skirt advice please - fabric, lining, anything else I need to know before I get one?

I am petite with a pear shape, and pencil and pleated skirts always make my hips look bigger. Soft, fluid A-line shapes suit me much better in dresses, so I'm ready to invest in a bias cut skirt.

I've done some research and they mostly come in polyester, acetate or viscose. I know viscose can shrink and polyester can get staticky, but I have no experience with acetate at all.

  1. Fabric: how do each of these actually perform in a bias skirt? Which would you pick, and why?

  2. Lining: nearly all of them at a reasonable price are unlined. That's fine in summer, but in winter I'll be wearing mine with tights and boots, and I'm worried about static, clinging, and the skirt bunching up against my boots. Do you buy a separate slip skirt or slip dress to wear underneath? I'd be wearing it with jumpers (and a cami underneath anyway), so a slip dress could work as the full layer.

  3. If a slip is the answer: what length works best? How much shorter than the skirt should it sit, and do you go for a slip skirt or a slip dress?

Any brand or style recommendations welcome too. Thank you!

I think they are very easy to get wrong as any kind of poor fit or ‘uneven physique’ shows up so easily but the Ghost ones always look the best of the high-street bunch.

The Uniqlo ones last year came with an under slip that definitely improved the line

polyester doesn’t crease and needs no ironing. The skirt keeps its glow and flow

viscose aatin creases a lot in my experience, and also can shrink

Thank you. I know these fabrics are brutally honest but I do find mild compression tights shut them up winter. By summer I will be a toned goddess 😜 through daily manifestation.

Thank you. And I do want it
for work, so not to be precious with maintenance. I just want someone to confirm polyester is OK, it would be so much easier.

I’m not sure I understand the problem? I have two bias skirts, both are 100% wool and lined. They are both full or nearly full circle so they don’t cling to me for dear life, I thought the whole point was that they are not tight around the hips.

Have a look at Sézane Orlane skirt, it combines bias-cut panels with a front seam. I have the taupe one and it’s really wide at the hips.

The Uniqlo ones look cheap in person.

Similar shape and I often find that the zips in bias skirts make my hip look bigger

this is rather nice https://www.meandem.com/fluid-velour-midi-skirt-dark-chocolate?glCountry=GB&glCurrency=GBP&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=20162357644&gbraid=0AAAAADtaHAJugOCSLyOxhhM62lmB5R0Qn&gclid=CjwKCAjwl4HXBhAjEiwAHlpWhPve-NQnqWo-RW90dde33kAdXtFAjYd_of6zYkUEXY0mI3llOtmwGRoC-74QAvD_BwE

I generally make all my clothes and I’ve made bias cut skirts in silk and fine wool and linen. Of the fabrics you mention I’d go for viscose as the nearest to a natural fibre.

I do have about 3 Ghost dresses though and they’re in a medium weight almost satin backed crepe. That is, the crepe on the wrong side is smooth and slightly shiny. But they’re not lined which is a pest - I’ve made linings from silk to attach as they’re nice dresses although I don’t think they’re worth the full price (I stalked the Ghost sale online for the designs I wanted).

But they’re nice enough for shop-bought and Ghost do a nice accurate bias cut.
