Midi skirts with shoes at work in winter - what colour tights?

Winter outfit question for the tights wearers! 🍂

When you wear a skirt with shoes rather than boots, what colour tights do you go for?

I've always been a black tights woman, sheer only, 7 to 20 den, but they only really work with black footwear or if skirt / dress are black. I've now got some lovely brown, metallic and burgundy shoes, and I'm planning to buy skirts in brown, navy and maybe burgundy or dark green. Black tights feel too harsh with the lighter shoes and seem to break up the whole outfit. Nude feels a bit old-fashioned to me (I do keep a pair for interviews with a navy dress and nude heels).

I love the look of knee-high boots under a midi skirt, where you don't see any leg at all, but they're just not practical for sitting at work all day. I get too hot and uncomfortable, and I can't move properly in them.

So what's your go-to? Light brown? Sheer chocolate? Something else entirely? Thank you.

I aim to match either my shoes or my skirt.

I’ve got lots of different colours that go with different midi dresses/shoes. Burgundy, navy, chocolate brown, teal, as well as black. It’s sometimes tricky getting the right shade though. I also rarely wear shoes and like long boots or ankle boots with midi dresses

I have opaque ones as I have shorter skirts and dresses too and prefer opaque for warmth and not having to think about hairy legs but probably don’t listen to me as I am generally not fashionable and wear things I like and suit my shape

Black or dark brown is only where I venture to. I think any other colours and you end up wandering into children's TV presenter territory.

I do know what you mean about nudes being old fashioned. BUT. I wear a very sheer sheer anyway as I opt for warmth over being modern in the winter, or wear boots - or I also have a lot of sheer chocolate tights to go with my brown outfits (I wear lots of brown)

I have a lot of dark grey tights, wear with burgundy, navy, or dark green skirts and brown boots.

I like the idea of sheer chocolate tights though!

@lovehatesummer Where do you buy grey please? I wonder if “nearly black” is close, I am not sure what that means really 😂

I wear thick black tights with shoes of every colour, from yellow to pink to white to green and burgundy and every other shade!

I wear knit tights!

I have grey, black and beige.

then have brown, burgundy and grey calf length boots (all same pairs in different colours 🫣😂) or black shoes.

all goes fine. I wear midi dresses and a cardi rather than a skirt. I have grey, red, pink and blue dresses and grey pink and salmon cardis.

I mix and match as I feel like.

nothing wrong with nude tights.

I just don’t like sheer tights personally and if I wear tights they are opaque at thinnest but generally knit.

Chocolate colour sounds lovely. And your shoes sound great!

I bought some grey tights in Primark today

OneNewEagle · 25/10/2026 19:26

I’ve got some grey ones that work with lots of my skirts and dresses.

I’ve bought them in the past from marks and next.

Barely black is a gravy colour

lovehatesummer · 25/10/2026 20:56

Grey tights - M&S or Uniqlo usually have opaque ones, but I keep an eye out for knit versions too. I prefer darker greys to lighter, but not black... for whatever reason, I have in my head that black tights only go with black boots/shoes 😂

EleanorMc67 · 26/10/2026 02:52

I don't like sheer tights. I wear knee-high or ankle boots mostly, but if I had to wear shoes, I'd wear coloured opaque or - depending on the outfit - coloured crochet or lace tights.

I often wear burgundy coloured tights for autumn. I get all mine from tights tights tights, there Gipsy 100 denier ones are amazing and come in so many colours! https://www.tightstightstights.co.uk/

Tights with shoes is a nightmare. I think proper nude looks best to my eye. Colours are too "fun" in a in-fun way. Black, brown or blue tights make me think of a child's school uniform or part of a very religious style of dress. I opted for a dark grey (from falke @Flomasterina - pricey but they last many winters) but avoided this as much as possible and also opted for boots instead of shoes to alleviate some of the nightmare.

trainedopossum · 27/10/2026 18:09

I like brown, aubergine, khaki opaques (Gipsy makes lots of muted colours, which I prefer to brights) or lace. H&M and Calzedonia make lace tights and knee highs in colours other than black.

Banjas · 27/10/2026 18:33

I wear a lot of dresses, winter and summer.
In winter I wear black, navy, brown and dark grey opaque tights depending on the colour of the dress.

Ex-convent schoolgirl here - maybe that's why I like black opaques ...!

I have Falke & Wolford ones - yes, they're expensive. But I still have pairs from maybe 20 years ago that are almost new-looking, as the quality is so great (in fact, I think I've only lost two or three pairs because of excitable cats!).
