Barbour coats adding a hood

I’ve just bought a Barbour coat thinking it had press studs for a hood but it doesn’t. Unfortunately I’ve fallen in love with the coat so I was wondering if anyone had experience of adding press studs themselves to attach a hood or is this something that a tailor could do? I was told the Barbour repair service couldn’t do it as it’s changing a garment rather than repairing 🤷‍♀️

is this something that a tailor could do? No.
Which coat is it?

MassiveOvaryaction · 23/10/2026 18:27

Wear a hat.

It potentially would be something anyone able to fix press studs would be able to do provided the collar allowed for it. It's also not that expensive (relative to the cost of a tailor) to buy a kit to do it yourself - ranging from a simple hammer and press method to having special applicators to do it - if you have any friends into dressmaking ask if they have some vario pliers.

The biggest challenge then would be finding the wax jacket hood on the barbour site that matches the cloth/colour of your jacket.

Might just be easier to get an umbrella or a hat though.

You'd need to do that first, get compatible press studs and get them positioned precisely. There's no guarantee that the end result would be a success.

It’ll spoil it. Get a hat.

tomorrowfollowstoday · 23/10/2026 18:47

I agree it will spoil it.

Aquasoap · 23/10/2026 18:50

Which coat?

IVeryMuchDoNotThinkSo · 23/10/2026 18:54

I’ve got a Barbour hat, it’s excellent and much better than a hood.

MrsChiquitaBananas · 23/10/2026 18:56

I don’t think I’d take the risk with an expensive Barbour, it might spoil the look too as it’s been designed without one. What about a waterproof hooded scarf/snood type thing? Loads on Etsy/amazon etc

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/10/2026 19:01

I’ve got a Barbour with a press Studd hood. The hood is very annoying. It pulls off whenever there is any pressure pulling against - bag strap, bus seat. It usually ends up in my bag all winter and I wear a hat!

LIZS · 23/10/2026 19:37

If it has sufficient collar you may be able to send it to the factory for them to insert the studs

FranCockerelVoice · 23/10/2026 19:59

@LIZS , I think the OP addressed that.

Ah sorry, yes.

Ah sorry, yes.

Thanks but she could contact them to ask if she hasn't.

Scottishdame · 23/10/2026 22:28

It’s the Beadnell Icons coat. Normal Beadnell coats (not the Icon version) have the studs so I don’t think it’d look wrong. There is a icons tartan hood which matches the tartan of the coat so that would be the hood I’d get

Phone them and ask. Contact details are on the Re-wax and Repair page.

Angelina97 · 23/10/2026 22:37

You could just get the hood sewn on rather than faff with press studs

Portakalkedi · 23/10/2026 22:57

Agree with PP - look for a waterproof hooded scarf type thing in a colour that goes with the coat

Scottishdame · 24/10/2026 10:20

Thanks for the suggestions, I don’t think I’d wear a hooded waterproof scarf. I’ll
enquire with a local tailor as it seems fairly simple

@Scottishdame , if you can get a hood, I'd try to get a cheap pre-loved jacket of the same design and get an exact match for the poppers. The popper placement will need to be precise.

I would not undertake the task and I am usually quite brave.
You run the risk of ruining a good coat.

If your coat is something like a Beadnell, the pre-loved jacket could be waxed and worn if the coat was ruined, or re-sold.

FranCockerelVoice · 26/10/2026 13:44

@Cetera , it might be called a Beadnell but it doesn't look like one. It's a very expensive plastic coat.

Thanks for the link, and I'm not dissing your post. It's much better than the idea of adding a hood to a jacket.
