Tell me how to protect Ugg boots

Never had Ugg boots as I don’t like the look of them at all but being a JW Anderson fan and feeling a strong FOMO I have ordered the ORANGE boots.

What do you recommend to protect them from the rain? I’m interested in first-hand experience from proud owners of Ugg boots in bright colours or anything that is not the typical brown/black. I can (and will) ask Ugg directly but they will obviously recommend their care kit and I want a recommendation coming from “real” experience.

Thanks!

Arent they house slippers?

Most aren't designed as outdoors shoes- they are slippers to be worn inside the house. It only seems to be Brits that wear them outside! If you have a type which can be worn outside, then they would already have some sort of protective coating on them.

Not very helpful! 😜

I had several pairs of uggs. A waterproof suede protector. I have bought a few. From Clarks or any decent shoe shop. Leave them overnight to dry properly it works. Tried and tested OP.

Yep this. As the Aussies will tell you, only bogans wear uggs outdoors!

Maisymouse2 · 23/10/2026 10:56

Uggs are worn by many students...not only " bogans"...
Love my Uggs
Last yrs and no pre treatment
So try the suede spray as suggested of you are a 'bogan"

Ive been wearing Uggs for the past 20 plus years, I’m on my third pair and I just don’t wear them in the rain. I wear outdoors if cold and dry, and indoors as well in the winter, my downstairs floors are all original floorboards or stone so are ideal as slippers if it’s particularly cold. Stay out of the rain but if they do get wet leave to dry then invest in a good suede brush and give them a good rub.

Buy the Ugg spray from Ugg, it’s very good and will protect from water splashes but don’t wear them in an absolute downpour.

And no, they are not slippers, originally they were made for farmers.

I can’t imagine them lasting long on a farm! Perhaps in very dry mud free cold climates. I always understood they were originally from Australia and were worn in and around the house.A lot of homes in Australia don’t have central heating and it can get cold in the winter.

Originally for Australian farm workers. Then picked up by Australian surfers as they are incredibly warm after being in the sea. Then they became fashionable. They’ve always been outdoor shoes.

purpledagger · 23/10/2026 21:16

agree with thr suede protector and don’t wear in the rain/acoid puddles.

threetrainers · 23/10/2026 21:21

They are bright orange so will be harder to keep mark free vs a dark colour.

Pollyanna87 · 23/10/2026 23:20

Aussies are always saying that no one wears Uggs outside the house, but weren’t they originally meant for the outback?

Flannelfeet · 23/10/2026 23:31

Scotch guard spray? I use it on my suede trainers so it should be fine on them i guess?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 24/10/2026 08:07

Crep suede protector.

ThePM · 24/10/2026 08:09

My daughters are absolutely assiduous about never getting them wet- one even brings an emergency change of shoes if there is a threat of rain.

They get brushed and the soles wiped.

On Mumsnet, they are: there’s a very sharp division between indoor and outdoor shoes (see the many “shoes off” threads). But everywhere else, people wear them outdoors. There is the spray from Ugg, and many other suede sprays.
