Love bombing in shops

When did this become a thing.
just been in an Me+Em, Jigsaw and Hobbs- just browsing.
Every other customer gets a:
”I love your jacket”
”Your jumper is beautiful, where did you get it?”
”Your shoes are amazing”.

so insincere, had to leave it’s so nauseating!

feeling old and grumpy!!!!

Well I must be old and grumpy too.

KitsyWitsy · Yesterday 13:14

Oh God. I get it all the time in America. Drives me crazy. Plus them wanting to know my name and life story.

BandyUrnham · Yesterday 13:15

It's not love bombing, it's fake flattery. Just say thank you and leave.

JaneJeffer · Yesterday 13:17

This hasn’t caught on in Ireland because everyone would just reply “thanks, Penneys”

PlateSpinningQueen · Yesterday 13:19

Yes fake flattery- but they have obviously been trained to do this.
why on earth? Who do they think it works on?

Just as bad in some stores (I’m looking at you M&S) is the need for the assistant to pass comment on what you have bought.

”Such a beautiful colour”. “This fabric is gorgeous”.

just makes me feel a bit ill it’s so insincere.

M&S telling you “you have great taste” when you’re shopping online is really annoying too

Sesame2011 · Yesterday 13:40

When I was younger I used to work in a clothes shop that came over from America (and thankfully crashed out the UK after a few years) and we were told how in America their sales assistants did this and how we should do it too. The problem is the UK market doesn't appreciate random and insincere compliments and only want assistance when looking for it. I hate it. Hate anyone talking to me when shopping.

Advententhusiast · Yesterday 14:02

Shops need to leave me alone so I can peacefully browse. Thats the only chance they have on getting my money.

topcat2014 · Yesterday 14:12

Advantages of running your own shop:

  1. You can sit down if you want
  2. You can drink tea at the till
  3. You can speak to people who look like they want to be spoken to, and simply greet others and leave them to it

The response ought to be - ‘You think so? Ah, so I don’t really need to buy anything to replace it in here after all, do I? Bye!’
🤣

I’d rather have this than miserable sods who can’t smile or say thank you, or just talk to colleagues and ignore customers.

Floisme · Yesterday 14:54

I enjoy all forms of flattery, fake or otherwise

It comes from the other side of the Atlantic. Go to Paris if you want the opposite. I do prefer some middle ground.

How is it shopping in Paris? 😁

OrdinaryGirl · Yesterday 15:02

Oh OP it makes me so uncomfortable too!
Your thread made me think of this Daniel Foxx classic about everyone who works in Lush…

The first time I went to America it was a real culture shock! They almost jumped on me the second I walked through the door and started chatting as if we were lifelong friends. Found it very odd and wanted to say, sorry do we know each other? I had to start bracing myself before entering a shop! I don’t think it was even for tipping as they were retail shops. It makes me want to run though, not buy something. Give me a surly shop assistant who doesn’t make eye contact, any day 😁

Additup · Yesterday 15:08

The worst is in clothes shops when sales assistants come over and ask you if you'd like some help choosing something today 😂

M&S aren’t allowed to do this and I much prefer that model. If I need assistance I’ll ask. Annoying though when you can’t find anyone to ask when you do need them.

BillieWiper · Yesterday 15:10

It's customer engagement. They realize 'can I help you' for whatever reason puts people off sometimes. So saying a pleasant remark about them is trying to do the same thing but with flattery. It must be from the states.

I've never heard it before in clothes shops so they definitely don't do it to me!

Some chugger said he liked my tattoo and asked me what it was. I laughed and said 'why?' and 'fuck knows!' As nobody would ever ever genuinely compliment that piece of shit. 😂

ReadingSoManyThreads · Yesterday 15:15

Oh god, I'd hate this.

DoubleDoubleDown · Yesterday 15:37

Not gonna lie,.I love it. Even though I know they're lying I leave the store with a smile and a 'fuck yeah,I DO look good!.

Lozlegs · Yesterday 15:42

Lush shops are like this, harassed by fake nice assistants trying to wash your arm, its so un british and American, I don't go in there anymore as such an uncomfortable experience. No point saying no thank you just browsing as another and another will bother you.

hiintrepidheroes · Yesterday 15:45

Pass this feedback onto stores. As someone who works in fashion retail we have managers forcing us to stop back of house tasks at certain times for shop floor presence and customer engagement. Managers don’t understand customers sometimes want to be just left alone to browse. Trust me, retail assistants hate it too but we’re constantly monitored by managers doing floor walks.

So op, it sounds like you not only get compliments but you also have access to real branches of Me and Em, Jigsaw and Hobbs (ok you can keep the Hobbs) and you’re still not happy?
