I’m feeling rubbish and very fat. Big stomach and fat legs. Very pale and ginger. In need of ideas of what to wear to my daughter’s graduation next month. I never go anywhere and have no smart clothes. I’m very frumpy. I don’t want to show her up. Part of me really doesn’t want to go. I can’t wear a dress, I have fat legs and ankles, wide feet. I struggle to find trousers to fit my thighs. This is a nightmare.

You will find something perfect, OP.

Hopefully, the posters who are good at suggestions on these threads will have some good ideas for you over the weekend.

I like Jess Bacon on Instagram and the places she recommends for clothes. She always looks great.

Snag do some wide legged trousers. Maybe they would work?

TheSquareMile · 17/10/2026 00:45

Would this be suitable, OP?

I've been to 2 graduations and not many people were what I would call super smart. Most people were just well turned out. I wore a long skirt and top to the forest one and cropped linen trousers to the second with a nice bag. Lots of people wore jeans and were very casual. Lots of people wore national dress which was fun to see.

What do you normally wear if you don't wear dresses and trousers don't fit?

Look at M and S they have loads of wide legged trousers at the moment.

Hi OP - what height are you? Do you already have a coat/jacket, bag & footwear (&, if not, what shoe size are you)? Do you have any good costume jewellery (&, if not, are you more of a gold or silver person, or both)? Finally - what's your budget?

Being pale & ginger is a good thing, not bad! (Pale & strawberry blonde here!) So I assume you'd like & suit olive, burgundy, maybe some browns or inky blues/navy? Do you prefer plain block colours to patterns? I like wearing black too, if I ramp up my make-up a bit & wear a strong orange-red lipstick.

This Live Unlimited co-ord set is out of stock right now on the Next website, but would you wear something like this?

Ok, scrap that suggestion above as it's really quite dull. There are much nicer options out there! All depends, obviously, to a large extent on your budget plus my other questions above, but I'm going to fire some thoughts & ideas across.

They really don't make it very easy to find the good stuff for plus sizes though, do they ...??!

I know you probably don't want to spend this much on a coat - but what a coat! And with your colouring! Bloody hell, you'd just need to sort your footwear & you could just wear your bra & pants underneath, it's so nice! (Though you wouldn't be able to take it off all day ... 😁) And also looks much better on the larger model too ... hugely reduced too.

I just had to post it anyway as it's so fab ... I'll post some other finds tomorrow!

Hi OP, I have a very difficult figure to dress and was feeling very low about it…the woman who posts on Facebook as Fat Fab and Forty plus has done wonders for my morale…she is unapologetically large and really enjoys her clothes.

You could try column dressing, where you wear the same colour on your top and bottom, so for you, probably wide trousers and a top that skims your shape. Then smart shoes, nice bag, jewellery, bit of makeup, and a wrap/ jacket or coat, and you will look put together.

Alternatively would you consider a one-off session with a personal stylist - I did this for a wedding guest outfit a few years ago, when I was feeling very clueless, and it was very helpful.
