Coats look shit with barrel leg trousers

I love a barrel leg. Best thing that ever happened to my legs. However I also love a decent warm coat and end up looking like I’ve got a dressing gown on over pyjamas.

Anyone got a solution for this?

My own approach:

Either
a) accessorize with good accessories so it looks intentional
b) subscribe to mailing lists where this look is quite common so you get used to it. I like Balenciaga for this - I don’t buy anything but they send me emails with all kinds of shapes and silhouettes. Uniqlo also does the baggy slouchy look very well but there’s a risk you end up buying something.

Wear a short jacket. Id never wear a long coat with barrels. I found a very nice jacket in Tu clothing very inexpensive and warm.

I’m liking my trench coat with barrel legs at the moment. I think my leather jackets will work too, but it’s been too warm for them so far. I’ve been looking for a cropped trench, but yet to find one that I like.

Yes short jacket, never anything that goes past your hips with these trousers, same as wide legs, I always tuck in

I think medium length coats can be tricky to wear with barrels.
But cropped coats and long look good. As do blazers and other similar length jackets.

I agree, anything that hits at the widest point of the trousers can feel a bit off if you're not used to super slouchy dressing. Waist length or ankle length (or near enough) is good.

People are giving an opinion on a chat forum, theres no new legislation being urgently heard in the Lords or anything.

Cropped boxy coat I’d suggest would be better, and much more intentional styled look

People are giving blanket, 'Thou shalt wear short coats' statements, which seem like they're 'banning' themselves from longer coats - that seems a bit silly to me. But you're choosing to be completely literal, it seems.

Wear a coat so long that you can only see the very bottom of your trousers. I have a very long coat that I throw over everything and I love it! It’s Rain Sisters. I got it in the half price sale and it’s beautiful quality, keeps me warm and dry and it makes me feel fabulous even if I’m wearing baggy jeans and a jumper underneath!

I tend to wear either a leather jacket (the Whistles “clean bonded” one), a short quilted jacket (I have a dark green one and a creamy beige one, both Cos) or a long coat, wool (black wrap Weekday one that’s ankle length) or long puffer style (the Arket down one from a few years back).
