Is anything else as good as Uniqlo Heattech?

I'm wfh full time and already feeling the cold but reluctant to put the heating on yet. I always see these recommended as the go to for warm underlayers - is it worth getting them or are there cheaper options that are just as good?

Heattech’s ‘claim to fame’ (as i understand it) is that supposedly when moisture comes in contact with the rayon in it it produces heat so warms
you up, on top of the standard insulated properties.

Now I take this with a big fat pinch of salt. Demonstrable heat? I doubt it. Just google what it is made up of, cotton and a load of plastic, in fact the regular one is 79% petroleum derived fibres. I have bought a lot of it in the the past for my kids doing winter sports, but I think layering is the key. Great marketing campaign and branding though!

Well yes but that depends on your budget

I prefer the feel of the m&S version, they feel softer. I wear one every day from October to May!

if you want to splurge a bit dh swears by merino base layers but I don't think they feel as cosy.

I was trying to avoid going to a store but it sounds as though I need to feel them as soft and cosy is important to me.

I like Sainsbury's version at least as much if not more. No doubt merino is nicer, but I have enough and they never seem to wear out!

HeatIQ long sleeve base layer £5 at primark.
Soft and warm. I have one in each colour

The regular one is good for layering under a sweater. It's quite thin, but does the job.

The ultra warm is fantastic and it is soft enough for my kid who is super picky about clothes that are soft. That and a wool or alpaca sweater and I am toasty even when it's frigid.

They sell one that's a blend with a bit of cashmere, I didn't find that as warm as the ultra warm, but it was quite thin.

I bought several of these a few years ago, they were with pyjamas in store. I got navy and plum with a subtle glitter fleck. Nice for a Christmas vibe. 20% off atm. Like them better than heat tech. Even the cashmere one, which is very sheer.

Merino wool baselayers. Especially layered.

I bought a couple of these last week - https://www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/products/E478965-000/00?colorDisplayCode=09&sizeDisplayCode=006. They’re very warm but thick. I also bought some for my children and they’re much thinner. The HEATTECH slouch socks are great too. If you’re WFH though you can’t beat an Oodie for warmth, it doesn’t look great but its so warm. I actually find mine too hot most of the time 😅

HughManity · 14/10/2026 20:35

m&s thermals.

shuffleofftobuffalo · 15/10/2026 12:44

I’ve not found anything to be as good as heat tech. They also last for years.

stripesandspotsanddots · 15/10/2026 12:46

I have HT and the equivalent from Primark and Sainsburys which are just as warm but do tend to fray sooner than the Uniqlo version.

Yes there is, even better - check out a brand called OGL move, they have lite and prowarm sweaters. Lovely soft material and really warm, I have half their collection.
